Say Goodbye to Dark Spots & Hyperpigmentation: These Niacinamide Serums Are the Real Deal

In the quest for perfect skin, there’s no toner, cream, or serum we won’t try. Recently, the star product in our rotation is less focused on aging and all about even, glowing radiance. After all, these are all results you can expect once you start using one of the best niacinamide serums on the market. For the newly initiated, niacinamide—also known as vitamin B3, a key part of the vitamin B complex — offers a host of skin benefits. It improves texture, reduces bumps, minimizes pore size, combats dark spots and hyperpigmentation, controls oiliness, and maintains hydration, all contributing to healthier, more balanced skin.

While niacinamide is naturally produced in our bodies, unlocking its full range of skincare benefits requires topical application. “It’s a powerhouse ingredient widely used in skincare for its many advantages, including its tolerance by sensitive skin,” says Dr. Brendan Camp, a double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology.

With so many niacinamide products on the market, Shape editors took the time to research and test dozens of serums, evaluating each one for effectiveness over 8 weeks. The serums on this list met Shape’s high standards for efficacy, value, and affordability. Keep scrolling to learn more.

Size: 1 oz., 2 oz. | Key Ingredients: 10% niacinamide, 1% zinc PCA

Dr. Noah Gratch, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, says The Ordinary’s serum is his “number one recommendation” as it’s “affordable and works well for all skin types.” He says the product effectively brightens dull skin, reduces oiliness, minimizes pores, and provides hydration. With its higher concentration of niacinamide, he advises easing into use (try it once a week, then every other day, then daily), but once incorporated, it becomes an effortless part of your skincare routine.

Despite The Ordinary’s budget-friendly price point, testers describe the application experience as unexpectedly luxurious. The serum’s consistency is just right — not too runny — making it easy to apply and massage into the skin without any mess.

One tester shared that they used it twice daily on their face and neck for eight weeks and didn’t experience any breakouts, even with acne-prone skin. Instead, they noticed fewer dark spots, reduced acne, and a brighter, more even complexion.

Size: 1 oz., 2.5 oz. | Key Ingredients: 10% niacinamide, glycerin

Safe for all skin types, this unscented serum comes at an incredibly affordable price point. Dr. Gratch recommends it for daily use, as the gentle formula is great for acne-prone skin. However, he advises starting gradually with this 10% concentration to ensure your skin can tolerate it. He also notes the importance of being mindful of other products in your routine when introducing this serum. Testers warned that using it alongside too many actives initially caused an adverse reaction. However, once they simplified their routine, the serum fit seamlessly, delivering a brighter complexion and reducing the appearance of scarring.

For under $10, this serum lasts a long time and is best described as a “steal” for anyone new to niacinamide who wants to try it out without breaking the bank.

    ISDIN Melaclear Advanced

Size: 1.7 fl oz. | Key Ingredients: niacinamide, tranexamic acid, spot corrector complex

We get it — this product is a bit of a splurge, especially compared to other serums on this list. But the dermatologist-tested, clinically proven formulation makes it worth considering. According to Dr. Camp, this advanced serum is packed with tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and a proprietary spot corrector complex, which all work together to reduce dark spots and brighten complexion.

Testers noted its thick, gel-like consistency, with just one pump being enough to cover both the face and neck. It layers seamlessly with other products, absorbing quickly without leaving a film on the skin. Plus, there’s no annoying waiting period before moving on to the next step in your routine. After four weeks of consistent use, testers reported smaller pores, smoother skin, and a noticeable fading of acne scars. However, because of its active ingredients, it might not be ideal for sensitive skin types. One tester mentioned experiencing minor irritation initially, but their skin adjusted to the concentration over time.

Size: 1 oz. | Key Ingredients:  5% niacinamide, diglucosyl gallic acid, morus alba leaf extract

Testers and dermatologists alike rave about this product for glowing skin. Dr. Camp explains that its radiant effect comes from mica, a mineral that reflects and scatters light to create a luminous finish while softening the look of imperfections. But mica isn’t the only standout ingredient — niacinamide, diglucosyl gallic acid, and mulberry leaf extract also shine, working together to brighten the skin, balance pigment production, and protect against free radicals that can lead to dark spots.

A little bit of this serum goes a long way. A pea-sized amount can even be mixed into your moisturizer for easier application, as the product can feel a bit runny on its own. It pairs beautifully with makeup, adding a radiant glow while the niacinamide works to brighten skin and reduce hyperpigmentation. Testers initially thought it would be just a makeup-skincare hybrid but were pleasantly surprised by how much their skin improved after 2-3 weeks of consistent use.

    Why We Like It

    • Deeply moisturizing

    • Clinically tested

Size: 1 fl oz. | Key Ingredients: niacinamide, glycerin, lactic acid

If moisture is what you’re after, this super serum delivers. Packed with glycerin, lactic acid, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, pro-vitamin B5, peptides, and niacinamide, testers noticed an improvement in their skin’s hydration using this star product.

After our testing period, users said their skin looked more hydrated, brighter, softer, and plumper, with a noticeable reduction in dullness. Many noted that even persistent dry patches had almost completely disappeared, becoming barely noticeable after consistent use. The serum also leaves a subtle shine, making it a versatile product that can double as a makeup highlighter — a feature testers loved. Many said they would gladly repurchase it and recommend it to friends, which is truly the highest praise a product can receive.

Paula's Choice Clinical Niacinamide 20% Treatment
    PHOTO: Amazon

Size: 0.67 oz. | Key Ingredients: 20% niacinamide,  meadowsweet extract, vitamin C

Paula always knows how to tackle skin concerns, and this product is no exception. With its potent 20% concentration of niacinamide, it’s no surprise the word “treatment” is in the name. If you’re feeling cautious, start slow — this is a powerful formula where less is more, and one full dropper is plenty for the face.

Testers noted that this serum feels more like a clinical-grade product, and as a result, some had to pause using their prescription tretinoin, finding the combination too drying and harsh. For those willing to swap their prescriptions or start with something less intimidating, testers raved about its weightless feel on the skin, noting that it “immediately brought life back into my skin, especially when used overnight,” and that they “woke up with bouncier skin.” After a few weeks of consistent use, many saw noticeable improvements in skin plumpness, clarity, and an overall more even tone.

Size: 1 oz. | Key Ingredients: Niacinamide, peptide proteins, hyaluronic acid, ectoin

For wrinkles, Dr. Gratch recommends this product for its anti-aging properties. It’s formulated with ingredients like niacinamide, adaptogens, mushroom, maca root, cacao, and goji berry. “These ingredients can help brighten the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and strengthen the skin barrier,” he explains.

Upon first use, the consistency is somewhat thin, but that works to its advantage, as it absorbs instantly and layers seamlessly with other products. There’s no worry about oily residue or a greasy shine. Beyond its efficacy, the product offers a subtle, pleasant scent and a cooling sensation on the skin. Testers noted that it feels more like a targeted treatment rather than something to use daily across the entire face, making it perfect for addressing specific concerns.

    SkinCeuticals Metaceli Renewal B3
    PHOTO: SkinCeuticals

Size: 1.7 fl oz. | Key Ingredients: 5% niacinamide, 2.5% firming tripeptide concentrate, 15% glycerin

To target early signs of aging, this lightweight serum combines 5% brightening niacinamide with a firming tripeptide concentrate. For those dealing with melasma, consistent use may help fade dark spots and brighten the skin’s overall appearance. While day-to-day changes may not be immediately noticeable, testers observed significant improvements in vibrancy, texture, and discoloration with continued use over a few weeks. They also reported smoother skin and less visible fine lines.

The product’s gel-like texture transforms into a serum consistency as it’s massaged into the skin. Don’t let that worry you. It’s incredibly lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. Plus, it layers beautifully under makeup, leaving skin feeling soft, hydrated, and prepped for the day ahead.

What to Know About the Best Niacinamide Serums

    • Ingredients: Niacinamide pairs well with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, retinol, and salicylic acid, making it a great option for various skin types. However, “I would avoid using AHAs and BHAs alongside niacinamide, as this can alter the pH of the serum, potentially causing irritation and redness,” says Dr. Gratch.
    • Range: The amount of niacinamide in a product varies, but 5% and 10% are the most common concentrations. “I would recommend starting at 5% and gradually working up to 10%,” says Dr. Gratch. Dr. Camp adds, “Consistency is key when using skincare products. No product works overnight; as a general rule, use a new product for 2-3 months before determining its effectiveness.”
    • Other products in your routine: Because niacinamide is generally well-tolerated, it can often be used both day and night. Its versatility makes it easy to pair with other active ingredients. “For example, it complements antioxidants like vitamins C and E, as well as brightening ingredients like kojic acid and soy,” says Dr. Camp. However, Dr. Gratch cautions that niacinamide doesn’t always pair well with alcohol, AHAs, and BHAs. “Be careful when introducing it into your skincare routine to avoid potential irritation,” he advises.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • What does niacinamide do for your skin?

Niacinamide is a common ingredient found in many cleansers, serums, and moisturizers. “This ingredient works to keep the skin hydrated by helping produce ceramides, combat oily skin (which reduces clogged pores), provide anti-aging properties, reduce inflammation and redness, repair damage to the skin barrier, promote skin healing, and diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation,” says Dr. Gratch.

    • What is the most effective niacinamide serum?

According to Dr. Gratch, paying attention to the ingredients is key when choosing a niacinamide serum. “An effective niacinamide serum should include ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides,” he explains.

    • Can you use niacinamide every day?

Yes, niacinamide can be used daily! It is generally well-tolerated; however, Dr. Gratch explains that if your skin becomes irritated with daily use, you can reduce the frequency to every other day.

    • Is 10% niacinamide too much for beginners?

When first introducing niacinamide into your routine, consider starting with a lower concentration to see how your skin tolerates it, advises Dr. Camp. For those with sensitive skin, a 10% concentration may cause irritation or redness. “I recommend starting with 5% and gradually building your skin’s tolerance,” says Dr. Gratch. If you’re unsure which concentration is best for you, test the product on a small area of your skin first and/or consult your dermatologist for guidance.

    • Is 10% or 5% niacinamide better?

Dr. Gratch recommends 10% niacinamide for most people, but 5% is an effective option and better suited for those with sensitive skin. For concerns like larger pores or hyperpigmentation, the higher 10% concentration may be more beneficial.
