As far as reusable and environmentally friendly cleaning products go, Swedish dishcloths have become a popular household item. These thin rectangular cloths made from a combination of cotton and wood pulp cellulose start stiff when they’re dry and transform into a soft rag when they come in contact with water. Swedish dishcloths are made from organic fibers and are, therefore, biodegradable. But, just like normal cloth rags, they can last a long time if you keep them clean. So before rushing to replace your used Swedish dishcloth, here’s how to wash it to extend its usage.

Can You Wash a Swedish Dishcloth?

Swedish dishcloths are designed to be durable and reusable. So, yes, you can clean a Swedish dishcloth—and you should.

Unlike sponges, which retain water, Swedish dishcloths dry significantly faster. This quick-drying trait means bacteria—a source of unpleasant odor—is much less likely to grow on Swedish dishcloths. However, like all reusable cleaning items, Swedish dishcloths must be cleaned eventually.

Washing Swedish dishcloths eliminates any food particles, dust, or dirt that linger beyond a simple rinse and wring. Plus, it keeps them sanitized, which is particularly important if they come into contact with residue from raw meat.

If you frequently use your Swedish dishcloth, wash it at least twice a week for maximum cleanliness. Regularly cleaning a Swedish dishcloth, whether by hand, in the dishwasher, or in the washing machine, ensures these eco-friendly paper towel alternatives stay sanitized for as long as possible.

How to Clean a Swedish Dishcloth

There are five common ways to wash a Swedish dishcloth: hand washing, machine washing, in the dishwasher, boiling, or microwaving.

How to Hand Wash Swedish Dishcloths

Step 1: Rinse. For a mild and simpler cleaning option, start by rinsing the Swedish dishcloth under cold water to remove any residue from previous cleaning.

Step 2: Wash with Soap. Use dish soap or a mild soap and massage it into the fabric with either your hands or a gentle brush.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry. Rinse the Swedish dishcloth thoroughly in cool water and let it hang over the sink faucet to dry.

Clean Swedish Dishcloths in the Washing Machine

Step 1: Rinse. Rinse the Swedish dishcloth in cold water before putting it in the washing machine (it can be washed with other clothes or laundry).

Step 2: Run Cycle. Run the washing machine on cold, tap cold, or warm in a gentle cycle.

Do not use fabric softener. Ideally, opt for an eco-friendly detergent without harsh chemicals. These detergents can affect not only the color and texture of the Swedish dishcloth but it can reduce its absorbency.

Step 3: Air Dry. Do not put the Swedish dishcloth in the dryer. The heat will cause the cellulose fibers to deteriorate, causing the cloth to shrink substantially and lose absorbency. Instead, lay it flat on a clean towel or drape it across the faucet so it can air dry.

Clean Swedish Dishcloths in the Dishwasher

Step 1: Load Dishwasher. Put the Swedish dishcloth on the top rack of the dishwasher. It can go in with a fully loaded cleaning cycle.

Step 2: Start Cycle. Start the dishwasher on the normal cycle.

Step 3: Remove to Dry. Keep an eye on the cycle stage and remove the Swedish dishcloth before the drying step, which can cause shrinkage and damage to the material.

    How to Boil Swedish Dishcloths

Step 1: Boil Water. For significantly dirty Swedish dishcloths, bring a pot of water to a boil on the stove.

Step 2: Boil Dishcloth. Put the entire Swedish dishcloth in the boiling water and let it boil for about 3-5 minutes.

Step 3: Remove from Water. Either remove the Swedish dishcloth from the water with a set of tongs or strain out the water with a colander.

Step 4: Air Dry. Allow the dishcloth to cool before wringing it out, rinsing it with cold water, and hanging it to air dry.

While boiling can be an effective way to sanitize the dishcloth, avoid over-relying on this cleaning method. Over boiling can lead to the Swedish dishcloth disintegrating faster. Only boil if it is excessively dirty.

How to Clean Swedish Dishcloths in the Microwave

Step 1: Rinse. Rinse the Swedish dishcloth and wring it out—but ensure it’s still damp for the best heat distribution.

Step 2: Heat in Microwave. Put the damp dishcloth into the microwave for about 60 to 90 seconds.

Step 3: Air Dry. Remove the Swedish dishcloth with a set of tongs. Be careful not to handle the hot dishcloth. Once it’s cool, you can rinse and wring out the Swedish dishcloth again and let it dry.

How to Make a Swedish Dishcloth Last Longer

Proper care can make any Swedish dishcloth last longer. Regularly clean the Swedish dishcloth by rinsing it after every use and using one of the five cleaning methods every week. It’s best to avoid cleaning your Swedish dishcloth with harsh chemicals like bleach, which damage the microfibers. Since these dishcloths are known to dry fast, the best drying method is to let them air dry by hanging them over the faucet, pinning them on a clothing line, or laying them on a clean towel. Avoid using a clothing dryer as its excessive heat could damage the Swedish dishcloth.

Proper storage of the Swedish dishcloth is also important in prolonging its life. Avoid folding or creasing the Swedish dishcloth, as it can lose its shape and be less effective at cleaning. Store your Swedish dishcloth in a clean and dry place so it will be ready for the next use.
