This piece of tennis memorabilia hitting the auction block is a grand slam in its own right.

The racket that Roger Federer used when winning Wimbledon in 2004 is expected to fetch more than $100,000 at Prestige Memorabilia. Open for bidding until February 9, the auction spotlights the photo-matched racket from the July 4, 2004, match, in which Federer topped then–world No. 2 Andy Roddick in four sets.

Federer opted to use this exact racket when winning the last point of the championship match, which he did by serving up an ace. That cemented his third Grand Slam title at the time, and the first major title defense and second Wimbledon victory of his career. Federer would go on to become the king of the British tournament, as the only player to win eight Wimbledon titles, with his last one coming in 2017.

    The inscription to Anna Wintour

While that provenance may be enough for serious tennis collectors, the racket is made even more special by an inscription that Federer provided. Located on the side of the frame, it reads “To Anna + Bee, Roger Federer.” The Anna and Bee in question? None other than Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and her daughter. The fashion icon has long been a supporter of Federer’s, and throughout his career she could be seen in his player box.

The racket comes with Resolution Photomatching authentication documents, with the company forensically confirming that it is indeed the one Federer used at the end of that 2004 Wimbledon match. As such, it’s the only photo-matched Federer racket from Wimbledon or any Grand Slam win to cross the auction block.

Of course, other pieces of Federer memorabilia have come up for sale before. In 2021, for example, Christie’s celebrated the star with two sales that summer. Back then, pre-sale estimates came close to those for today’s auction, reaching $97,500 for the outfit and racket that Federer used during his win against Robin Söderling at the 2009 French Open.

For its part, Prestige Memorabilia is no stranger to bringing big-ticket tennis items up for sale. Last January, the auction house sold Rafael Nadal’s 2007 French Open racket for a stunning $118,206. Even in retirement, Federer is still trying to best the Spanish star—this time by seeing whether his racket may fetch an even higher price.
