The Volkswagen ID.7 electric hatchback isn’t coming to the U.S. after all.
Following a delay, The Car Guide reported Monday that the ID.7 had been canceled for the U.S. and Canadian markets. That was then confirmed to The Car Connection by Volkswagen spokesperson Mark Gillies.
“Due to the ongoing challenging EV climate, Volkswagen has decided to no longer offer the ID.7 to the North American market,” Gillies said. “Despite this, electric vehicles continue to be a core part of Volkswagen’s long-term product strategy, and new electric models will continue to be introduced for this market.”
“We are encouraged by the enthusiastic reception of the ID.Buzz that was introduced late last year, and the strong ID.4 sales in January to date,” Gillies added. The ID.Buzz is VW’s modern, all-electric interpretation of the classic Microbus, while the ID.4 crossover has been positioned as a volume model since its introduction for the 2021 model year.
The ID.7 was originally due to reach the U.S. as a 2025 model. But in May 2024 VW said it was delaying the ID.7’s U.S. launch due to what the automaker called changing market dynamics. Meanwhile, the ID.7 has been on sale in Europe since 2023 in its basic hatchback form. An ID.7 Tourer wagon arrived in Europe after the hatch, but was never intended for the U.S., where wagons sell poorly.
Unveiled in 2023, the ID.7 rides on the same MEB architecture as the ID.4 and ID.Buzz, but comes wrapped in sleeker bodywork inspired by 2022’s ID.Aero concept. It would have competed against the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Tesla Model 3 in the niche segment of non-luxury electric sedans in the U.S.
