Captain Jason Chambers is opening up about the current status of his health after being diagnosed with melanoma in December 2024. The Below Deck Down Under Season 3 captain had previously revealed that he had a biopsy on a sunspot, which turned out to be a form of skin cancer — and now he has some “good news” to share.

    How to Watch

Watch Below Deck Down Under on Mondays at 8/7c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo app.

Jason appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen following the premiere of Season 3 of BDDU, where he opened up about his diagnosis. “It was an anxious wait for about four weeks. I got the biopsy done in Bali, but really couldn’t get seen until Australia,” he recalled.

But Jason said that the doctor had “good news” in response to the diagnosis. “On Christmas Eve, the doctor rang me up and said, ‘Listen, we’ve just got to do one more cut out, but it should be [a] five percent chance of it not returning.’ But it really, well, gee, it shocked the hell out of me,” Jason admitted.

Captain Jason Chambers reflects on his melanoma diagnosis

As a yacht captain, Jason gets a lot of exposure to the sun. Following his diagnosis, he opened up about his history with time spent in the sun and took to Instagram on Dec. 16, where he announced that he had been diagnosed with melanoma.

“For someone that spent their life in the sun, as a child playing sport to working on the ocean, I thought I was resistant to the damaging effects of the sun,” he wrote in the caption of the post. “I love the sun and its health benefits are evident, but be wise and like everything in life, it’s all about balance, choose your battles.”

Jason continued in the caption, noting that “early detection is key” when it comes to sun spots. “So find a chemical sunscreen product, get some shade with a hat, and enjoy the sun with protection,” he added.

Andy Cohen added on Monday’s WWHL episode: “Get your skin checked out every few months now.”

Captain Jason says that 2025 will be the year of “stability” for him

In a recent interview with The Daily Dish, Jason revealed that he is optimistic for 2025. Not only because of the good news surrounding his melanoma diagnosis but because he’s looking to date again after putting a “pause” on his romantic life in the past.

“I think 2025 is time to get some stability, find out where I’m going to be based, get my career going, and then it’s right to bring someone else in,” he said. “So yeah, 2025 will be the year that I will get these other things done and then, hopefully, I can meet someone and I’m ready.”
