eBay sellers were poised to update the item condition of used clothing on February 4th to comply with a new policy, but learned that day that eBay was delaying the rollout until the middle of the month.

Currently when listing used clothing, sellers can only select “Pre-owned” as the item condition. But in an announcement last month, eBay said, “Starting February 4, 2025, you’ll have three options to pick from: Pre-owned – Excellent, Pre-owned – Good, and Pre-owned – Fair.”

eBay also said the existing “New with defects” condition would be renamed to “New with imperfections.”

eBay also announced the change as part of its Winter Seller Update, creating an announcement board thread where sellers could comment and ask questions.

Some sellers said they were concerned at the work involved in updating their listings. Once eBay rolls out the Condition changes, it will automatically change all existing pre-owned clothing listings to “Pre-owned – Good.”

“This will be a nightmare for sellers that have 1000++++ clothing listing to try a remember if something needs to go to their new category of fair, good, excellent ect.,” one seller wrote. “I believe that this should be retro active to only new listing being made on or after feb date.”

The day the policy was supposed to roll out, eBay posted an announcement informing sellers it had decided to reschedule the launch of the new condition options “to assure the best experience possible for our customers.”

“Our goal is to give you a seamless selling experience, so we’re fine-tuning the new condition options rollout in order to be more efficient and beneficial to your business.”

Many sellers expressed concern that the new changes not only required a lot of work on sellers’ part, but that it might lead to more claims from buyers who might misinterpret the new condition descriptors. Even sellers can disagree on how to classify the condition of used clothing.

eBay told sellers the new condition options rollout would begin in mid-February.
