Toyota is recalling 106,061 Tacoma midsize pickup trucks because their rear brake hoses could leak fluid, reducing braking power and increasing the risk of a collision.

The recall includes certain 2024 and 2025 Tacoma models with four-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, and the smaller available brake setup. Toyota is also investigating the same issue in rear-wheel-drive trucks with the same braking system, as well as four-wheel-drive trucks with 18-inch wheels, but it hasn’t issued a recall yet.

On the recalled vehicles, Toyota has found that the rear brake caliper positioning allows mud and dirt to build up on the inside of the wheels under certain conditions—such as off-road driving. Over time, this can damage the rear brake hoses and cause fluid to leak, according to the NHTSA.

A certain amount of fluid is needed, under a certain hydraulic pressure, for the brakes’ power assist to function properly, so if fluid leaks out, drivers may need to press the pedal harder than expected to decelerate and stop.

The remedy is replacement of both rear brake hoses on affected trucks, which dealers will do free of charge. Toyota will also reimburse any owners who may have had related work performed on their own dime.

Toyota plans to mail interim letters to owners notifying them of the safety risk Mar. 24. A second letter will be sent once the automaker is ready for owners to begin bringing their trucks to dealerships to have the recall work done. In the meantime, owners can call Toyota’s customer service department at 1-800-331-4331 or visit Toyota’s recall site for more information. Toyota’s reference numbers for this recall are 25TB04 and 25TA04.

The recall population covers both model years of the current-generation Tacoma, but the previous generation was also recently recalled for loose nuts that could cause parts of the axle to separate.

The full-size Toyota Tundra has also been the subject of several recalls since its most recent redesign, including one for a transmission issue and another that required engine replacements.
