Many vining types of clematis can be used to conceal unattractive fencing. But virgin’s bower, or Clematis virginiana, is a particularly versatile option that’s native to North America and thrives in sun or shade.

“It’s fast-growing and produces clusters of fragrant, star-like, white flowers in late summer,” says Spencer Campbell, plant clinic manager at Morton Arboretum. “It also benefits pollinators and has distinctive, feathery seed heads that add seasonal interest in winter.”

Rachel Brinkman, manager of horticulture at the Arnold Arboretum, also recommends virgin’s bower, noting that this deciduous vine grows by twining and is best-suited for growing on lattice-type or chain-link fencing.

“Picking the right type of vine for the surface you wish it to climb up is important because vines use different methods to climb,” she says.
