Ford is recalling 240,510 SUVs because of issues with seat-belt hardware.

The recall includes 2020 and 2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models that may have improperly secured seat-belt buckle anchor bolts, according to the NHTSA. In addition, vehicles equipped with second-row center seats may have improperly secured bolts for the belt retractor at that seating position.

Bolts at multiple seating positions may have been improperly secured, the NHTSA noted. If the bolts aren’t tight enough, they could prevent the seat belts from properly restraining occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Squeaks and rattles could be a clue that bolts are not properly secured, Ford noted.

Ford told the NHTSA that it is unaware of any injuries related to this issue, but that it has received five related warranty claims—one of which tipped off the automaker to the problem. An investigation into the root cause is ongoing, but Ford believes it’s related to a supplier deviating from standard operating procedure in the assembly process.

Dealers will inspect the seat-belt anchor bolts at all seating positions, as well as the bolts for the second-row center seat-belt retractor on vehicles so equipped. If loose bolts are found, Ford said certain components will be replaced. All of this work will be performed free of charge, and Ford will reimburse customers for any related work they may have had done on their own dimes.

Ford plans to mail owner notification letters starting Mar. 31. In the meantime, owners can call the automaker’s customer service department with any questions. Ford’s reference number for this recall is 25S09.

The generation of Explorer covered by this recall was introduced for the 2020 model year and continues, with a major refresh, for 2025. The Lincoln Aviator is a related model that shares the Explorer’s platform.
