With so much emphasis on the rooms inside of your home, it’s easy to forget about the special role that the patio plays, if you’re fortunate enough to have one to call your own.

This year, why not really level up this outdoor space so that it lives up to its full potential? If you need a bit of inspiration, keep reading to learn more about some of 2025’s biggest patio design trends according to interior designers. Whether you’re looking to make your patio more usable season to season, host some gatherings out there with friends, revamp your furniture to make the patio look a bit more stylish—or all of the above—you’re in the right hands.

    Retractable Screens

If you have a covered patio that you want to be able to utilize during a larger portion of the year, be mindful to install retractable screens out there, Kara Kersten, the founder of Kara Kersten Design, says. Retractable screens will keep the bugs out during the hot summer but the heat in during the fall and winter.

Keep in mind that depending on the style of the screen you choose to buy, you may be spending anywhere between a couple hundred and several thousand dollars. However, if you long to be able to enjoy your outdoor space more often than just the summer months, this may certainly be a worthwhile investment.

    Well-Designed Outdoor Living Areas

It’s time to stop viewing your patio as an afterthought design-wise. Melinda Browning, the founder of Melinda Browning Interior Design, explains how we will continue to see patios that replicate living spaces inside the home.

This means weaving in elements including rugs, upholstered outdoor furniture, and even portable lighting, Browning says. Select furniture and decor that you’re extra excited about, and you’re sure to be spending a lot more time outdoors than you would have otherwise.

    Hosting Essentials

Browning notes the importance of designing a patio space that is suitable for hosting guests, too. After all, by no means do you solely have to contain gatherings in your main indoor living spaces.

In order to achieve this, she recommends installing ceiling fans and heaters outdoors to make the patio more usable as the weather changes. Browning also suggests incorporating full kitchens onto the patio when possible, complete with under-counter refrigerators and plenty of counter space to make entertaining large groups a breeze.

    Plenty of Color

It’s time to stop thinking of patios as colorless spaces; vibrant hues are certainly welcome outdoors, Chloe Judge, an interior designer with Mackenzie Collier Interiors, says.

“Colorful patios are taking over in 2025, replacing neutral tones with bold, vibrant designs,” she says. “The goal is to create an inviting, vacation-like atmosphere right at home.”

It’s easy to get the look simply by making a few key purchases, Judge adds. Judge explains how homeowners are incorporating striped umbrellas, colorful cushions, and vintage-inspired outdoor accessories throughout their space. Layering textures with rugs and planters adds depth, while tropical greenery enhances the getaway look, Judge says.

    Murals

With the introduction of more color comes the rising popularity of patio murals, too, Judge shares, citing these as a 2025 trend.

“From abstract patterns to tropical landscapes, murals make a patio feel intentional and expressive,” the designer says. “While furniture and decor add layers of character, murals take it a step further by transforming the entire atmosphere, expanding the ability of making your yard truly you.”

    Edible Gardens

Why not grow a garden on the patio this summer? Judge cites backyard edible gardens as a rising trend.

“People are embracing the benefits of slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and growing their own fresh ingredients,” she says. “Having a ready-to-use garden at your fingertips makes healthy eating more accessible while adding a personal touch to outdoor spaces.”

By no means does such a garden have to be large in order to be impactful, the designer adds. You can add a couple of potted herbs or a full vegetable garden since the trend is about making outdoor spaces both beautiful and functional, Judge says.

“A kitchen garden transforms a backyard into a personal, nourishing retreat,” Judge notes.
