Mercedes-Benz is recalling 20,339 S-Class luxury sedans because of front brake hoses that could rupture and leak fluid, rendering the brakes less effective.

Based on a disclosure Monday from the NHTSA, the recall includes the following versions of Mercedes’ flagship sedan:

These models have different powertrains, but all could have left the factory with front brake hoses that don’t meet durability specifications, Mercedes told the NHTSA. These hoses could leak over time after use in hot and humid environments, causing loss of power assist and reduced braking performance.

Low brake-fluid pressure can trigger a red dashboard warning light, but this isn’t guaranteed to appear before loss of fluid impacts braking performance, Mercedes noted. But while the automaker has received seven warranty claims related to this issue, it is not aware of any related crashes, injuries, or property damage.

The remedy for this recall is replacement of the front brake hoses, which dealers will do free of charge. Mercedes doesn’t anticipate needing to reimburse customers for out-of-pocket repair costs, as all of the recalled vehicles are still under warranty.

Mercedes plans to mail owner notification letters starting Apr. 25. Owners can also call Mercedes’ customer service department at 1-800-367-6372, or visit the automaker’s recall website, for more information.

Last year, Mercedes also recalled 27,190 S-Class sedans from within the same range of model years for fault engine control software that could lead to stalling and, in rare cases, fires. That issue was specific to cars with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, while this recall covers a wider range of models.
