Trader Joe’s is the go-to spot for fresh flowers—they’re budget-friendly, and there’s always a new bouquet to admire whenever you go. The retailer restocks its flowers every day, so you’re bound to find a fresh bloom for your kitchen counter, dining room, or bedroom.
And while Trader Joe’s might be experiencing an egg shortage right now, there’s absolutely no shortage of the prettiest flower of the year so far: peony tulips.
Peony Tulips from Trader Joe’s
Unlike regular tulips, these tulips are layered with many leaves, making them look almost as fluffy as your typical peony—just a little smaller. When closed, they look just like an ordinary tulip. But as soon as they start opening, you’ll see beautiful ruffled petals—many of which are two-toned.
Another perk of this flower is that it lasts longer than an ordinary tulip. As soon as regular tulips begin drooping, it’s pretty noticeable; you’ll see large gaps in every flower, which might encourage you to toss them. The more petals your tulips are graced with, the longer you’ll have them on display. You also don’t need to worry about pairing this fresh blossom with other flowers or filler plants—they look great as is.
The peony tulips from Trader Joe’s come in all kinds of colors. So far, deep red, vibrant pink, fresh yellow, classic white, gradient orange, and even a few dark purples and magentas have been spotted.
Peony tulips run for about $9 for a full bouquet at Trader Joe’s, including around ten flowers.
Arranging and Keeping the Flowers Fresh
As soon as you return home from your Trader Joe’s trip, it’s time to arrange the flowers in a vase. Before placing them in the vase, you’ll likely want to peel off the bottommost leaves of the flowers. Leave a few near the top of each flower for built-in greenery, but get rid of the ones that will take up space where the water sits.
Always cut your tulips before arranging them. Cutting them diagonally gives them more room to absorb water, which will help keep them fresher for longer. And don’t forget to change out the water regularly, too.
A common issue with any vase of tulips is that they often start to droop after just a few days. Fortunately, there are a few different ways you can keep your tulips standing tall for as long as possible, such as using preservatives or rotating the vase.
