Volkswagen and Audi are recalling 60,490 electric crossovers because of a software error that could prevent mandatory gear indicators from displaying correctly.

The recall includes the following vehicles:

The software for the brake control unit in these vehicles may not display the correct “N” in the instrument cluster indicating that the vehicle has been shifted into neutral. This could cause the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly, as the driver may not be aware that they need to apply the brakes, set the parking brake, or shift into park.

A rollaway could lead to a crash or injuries, and should drivers accidentally shift out of drive and into neutral, they’ll be left without propulsion without knowing why. This potential for confusion is why shift indicators are regulated under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102.

The remedy is updated brake control unit software, which has already been implemented in production. Dealers will install this software free of charge. All related expenses should fall under warranty coverage, so VW and Audi don’t anticipate having to reimburse owners.

The two brands plan to mail notification letters Apr. 25. ID.4 owners can also call VW’s customer department service at 1-800-893-5298, while Q4 E-Tron and Sportback owners can call Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Owners can also visit the VW or Audi recall sites, in either case using reference number 97H3 for VW and 454R for Audi to find information on the relevant recall.

VW only recently restarted production and sales of the ID.4 after a recall for faulty door handles. However, the 2025 ID.4 arrived only with the larger of the two previously available battery packs, effectively jacking up its price until the smaller pack becomes available again.
