March marks National Craft Month, and Michaels is kicking it off with its first-ever Creativity Trend Report. According to the findings, the world of crafting is now shaping self-care, home decor, and social gatherings.

“Crafting is no longer just a hobby—it’s self-care, a way to connect with friends, personalize your space, and even save money,” said trend and design director Mandi Clark in a press release. “People are also embracing creativity beyond traditional crafting—turning hosting, gifting, and decorating into creative outlets. From curating tablescapes and balloon arches to making gift wrap as thoughtful as the gift itself, more people are infusing creativity into everyday moments.”

The team at Michaels analyzed data from 1,300 stores and 52 million annual shoppers to identify six major crafting trends for the year ahead. Here’s what people are creating and why.

    1. Gateway Crafts

Everyone has to start somewhere, and social media is making beginner-friendly crafts more accessible than ever. Expect to see more tutorials that are simple, don’t require a huge initial investment, and go outside the usual crafts. More people are expected to try a completely new craft in 2025 thanks to these guided projects.

    2. Emotional Support Crafts

Some people craft for creativity, while others use it to relieve stress. With the hustle and bustle of American work culture, crafting as a form of self-care is gaining traction (these projects can even replace doomscrolling!). Seek ones that utilize your hands and are repetitive (like knitting) to reset and, more importantly, slow down and enjoy the moment.

    3. DIY and Dine

How does a weekend crafternoon sound? More people are swapping brunch for a creative gathering; crafting together can strengthen social bonds, according to the report. But that doesn’t mean you can’t craft and eat. Pair your aesthetic craft party with a light meal or appetizers only.

    4. Gifting with Love, Not Labels

The report says crafters are favoring personalized gifts because they are less expensive and tell a story. A bonus: These thoughtful gifts could even deepen your relationships since you’re putting thought, effort, and time into a gift for another. Some are concocting nostalgic scrapbooks and others are knitting cozy blankets or adorable sweaters.

    5. Manifesting with Miniatures

Dream big, except smaller—miniature crafts have surged as a way for people to tap into their inner whimsy and creativity. Think of this craft as a way to visual bigger pictures and manifest life-sized versions of the craft, such as book nooks. People are even combining miniature art with clay art, making tiny versions of food in clay form.

    6. Dupe-It-Yourself Decor

Crafting and interior decorating often overlap, and DIYers are channeling that creativity to bring high-end looks home for less. This year, more people will be tackling upcycling projects to recreate their favorite home decor looks. Not only does this create dupes for iconic (and potentially sold out) pieces, but the process also allows you to personalize everything.
