White & Case Team Joins ROSS’s Defense Against Thomson Reuters Copyright Claim

In the wake of an early win for Thomson Reuters in its complaint against AI firm ROSS Intelligence, a team of experienced IP attorneys from White & Case have joined the defense with plans to challenge the court’s order.

The addition of White & Case to the defense follows U.S. Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas’s order granting a partial summary judgment in favor of plaintiff Thomson Reuters, which contends ROSS violated the media company’s copyrights by using judicial opinion summaries from its Westlaw service, known as headnotes, to train ROSS’s own AI-powered legal service. ROSS had obtained the summaries through a third party, LegalEase Solutions.
