A few years ago, I slept in a circular bed in an Italian hotel that felt more like a museum than a bedroom. The thrill of a completely different bed shape had my interior design antennae up and after that weekend, I couldn’t stop seeing the curved furniture trend everywhere.

I’ve since learned from the experts that a mix of sharp and round edges is key for a balanced space. Curved furniture and decor is popular for a few reasons, some of which comes down to how our brains work.

Whether you’ve been taken by a puffy picture frame or a cloud couch, here’s why we all keep coming back to the look and how to work rounded pieces into your own home.

Why Curved Furniture Is So Popular

The swooping, soft shapes of curved furniture are pleasing on the eyes. Visually, they soften a space and make a house or apartment feel cozier.

“Curves represent something that’s not rigid but rather really comforting in the home, and who doesn’t want more of that?” asks designer and color consultant Daniela Araya.

Wavy curves and shapes may pique your interest but it might be hard to put your finger on why. However, there is scientifically-backed reasoning behind these feelings of delight.

“Curved furniture creates a shift in how we experience space,” says principal interior designer Christine Jahan. “Science backs it up: soft, organic shapes naturally put you at ease. That’s why you’re seeing more rounded sofas, arched headboards, and sculptural tables.”

How to Weave Curved Furniture Into Your Space

It can be hard to conceptualize weaving a curved couch into your home when all you have is straight walls, but it is certainly achievable. Here are just a few ways you can add curved furniture to your home for more visual interest.

Add a Statement Rounded Coffee Table

A great happy medium between smaller curved decor and larger pieces of furniture is a coffee table. It interrupts the design of a room in the best way possible.

“It instantly adds movement and breaks up all the straight lines in a space,” explains Araya.

Aside from softening your living room or sitting area, principal designer Jennifer Jones says “round coffee tables are also great for easier circulation in living rooms that are tight on space.”

Opt for a Rounded Sofa

After something with a little more impact? Try a curved couch or cloud-like modular sofa to really imbue a room with curves and soft textures.

“They are perfect for floating in a room and breaking up an otherwise boxy space. It’s all about creating balance in a room,” says Jones. “For example, pair a sofa with clean, straight lines with a round coffee table and an armchair with subtle curves.”

Try a Wavy Mirror

In spaces like a bath or powder room—where many fixtures are already in place—you can evoke a little more harmony through additions like a wavy or asymmetrical bathroom mirror. These reflective surfaces are relatively simple to install and create a dramatic impact without major renovations.

“A balanced mix of curved and angular lines creates depth and order in a room,” says Jahan.

Use Smaller Decor Like Lighting and Pillows

“If you’re not ready to go big, little details work too,” says Araya. “Squiggly table lamps, bobbin mirrors, or even an arched picture frame can introduce that softer, more playful feel in a low-commitment way.”

Pillows, vases, sculptures, and even side tables come in shapes that are anything but sharp and angular. Bed frames and benches are another cool way of embracing the silhouette without too much hassle.

Swap in Semi-Circle Hardware

Finding ways to implement rounded shapes around your home is no longer hard to do. You don’t have to spend months searching out pieces or consider redoing an entire room.

“Thanks to advances in manufacturing, these forms are more accessible than ever,” says Jahan.

This means you have plenty of different formats to choose from when you’re bringing curves into a room. One smaller way of doing so is through hardware, whether it’s puffy knobs for a cabinet or rounded half-moon pulls for drawers.
