If, when you picture IKEA furniture, you think of hyper-affordable, college dorm room or first apartment mainstays, you’re definitely not the only one—but you’re also overlooking a classic IKEA collection that has been going strong for 40 years: STOCKHOLM. A line that includes sleek cabinets and streamlined sofas, the many different editions of STOCKHOLM have bridged the gap between IKEA’s most budget-friendly offerings and the high-end, high-cost furnishings available from many retailers that are out of reach for most people. And now, with the STOCKHOLM 2025 collection, IKEA is offering that same balance of elevated quality and reasonable pricing with an enormous line of furnishings and accessories that will blow away IKEA skeptics and mega-fans alike.
The eighth edition of the STOCKHOLM line, STOCKHOLM 2025 is also the largest collection within the line yet (and one of IKEA’s largest collections ever, even). It includes 96 pieces, with items ranging from modular sofas to 100% wool rugs to a show-stopping glass chandelier to IKEA’s first bouclé armchairs. The STOCKHOLM collection has always offered elevated furniture, but the 2025 edition really champions craftsmanship, Scandinavian design, and expertly curated materials—all without prohibitive price tags.
IKEA
STOCKHOLM 2025 features a huge variety of pieces and, unlike previous STOCKHOLM collections, it’s intended to be more mix-and-match, says collection creative leader Karin Gustavsson.
“This collection works well with other things,” collection designer Nike Karlsson tells Better Homes & Gardens. The pieces are designed to go well together, but they’re also meant to go well with other furniture, regardless of where (or when) you bought it.
Take the many wood pieces in the collection. STOCKHOLM was once mainly a family of walnut furniture, but now it’s expanded to include multiple woods—pine, beech, oak—that all go well together, but also can be mixed into the furniture you already have for a more organic, collected-over-time look. (Matching furniture sets are not the way to decorate with wood furniture these days.)
IKEA
Breaking many people’s perceptions of IKEA, STOCKHOLM 2025 is meant to be a forever collection. Beyond it lending itself to a collected-over-time aesthetic that is more dynamic than “buy the whole set” approaches to furnishing your home, it’s also packed with pieces that are designed to age well and develop a bit of a patina.
“This was the purpose of the collection—to have something long-lasting,” Gustavsson says.
IKEA
STOCKHOLM 2025 is meant to be lived-in, used, and even passed down. In the creation of each item, the all-Swedish team of designers—which, in addition to Gustavsson and Karlsson, includes designers Ola Wihlborg and Paulin Machado—considered how people truly use their furniture. The dining tables are rounded so you can pack more seats around the table without someone getting stuck on a corner; the lamps have thick shades so the light coming from them is more diffuse and cozy; the shelves are designed to be sturdy and stable even without a backing, so they can be placed anywhere and viewed from all sides.
And none of this comes at the loss of IKEA’s commitment to shippable, packable furniture and affordability. The rugs ship folded for easier transport; larger pieces, like the dining table or shelves, still require assembly, but thanks to innovative hidden fittings, they don’t look like you assembled them yourself on your living room floor. Instead, they look luxe and expertly built—without an exorbitant price tag.
IKEA’s STOCKHOLM 2025 collection is available at stores around the world and online starting April 10.
