More hybrid compact SUVs are arriving on the market seemingly every year, but these two titans of practicality are some of America’s best-selling hybrid SUVs, and for good reasons.

2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
While the CR-V Hybrid is still fairly new, the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid is beginning to age gracefully. It’s an attractive SUV, but it hasn’t received a redesign update since 2019.
That said, there are seven trim levels to choose from, starting with the Hybrid LE to the Hybrid Limited. All are all-wheel-drive and powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with two electric motors that deliver 219 total horsepower.
Like its Honda rival, the RAV4 Hybrid has extensive safety features, which Toyota groups into its Safety Sense 2.5. It also has an impressive roster of in-cabin tech features, including wireless smartphone connectivity.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Highlights
Good on gas: Not just more powerful, the RAV4 Hybrid is even more efficient than the CR-V Hybrid. The Toyota achieves a combined average of 39 mpg, while the all-wheel-drive versions of the CR-V Hybrid get 37 mpg combined.
Tech features: This is a high-tech SUV, even in the base LE trim. It features an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, three USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on higher trims.
Woodland Edition: Starting at $36,515, the Woodland Edition adds outdoorsy appeal to the RAV4 Hybrid. While its off-road capability is modest, it’s an interesting twist on this fuel-sipping SUV. Highlights include a more rugged TRD-tuned suspension, bronze-colored 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, LED fog lights, and a larger roof rack with cross bars.

2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V Hybrid received a makeover a couple of years ago, so it’s largely unchanged for 2025. A new plug-in hybrid, hydrogen-powered fuel cell version of the CR-V is available, but it’s available only for lease in California.
All three trims of the CR-V Hybrid are powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. The hybrid powertrain produces 204 hp. The EPA rates it at 43 mpg city/36 mpg highway/40 mpg combined with front-wheel drive (FWD). With all-wheel drive (AWD), those numbers drop slightly to 40 mpg city/34 mpg highway/37 mpg combined.
Honda CR-V Hybrid Highlights
Strong and efficient: Gone are the days when “hybrid” was synonymous with “slow.” The hybrid powertrain under the hood of this Honda makes 204 horsepower and a healthy 247 lb-ft of torque, giving it better performance than the non-hybrid CR-V while netting better fuel economy.
Cargo volume: The regular Honda CR-V is a champ when it comes to hauling stuff. It’s true of the CR-V Hybrid, too. A substantial 39.3 cubic feet of space sits behind the second row. Fold that second row down, and you’re looking at 76.5 cubic feet of volume—excellent for a compact SUV.
Many standard features: Honda doesn’t skimp on safety and tech features in the entry-level Sport Hybrid trim. All trims come with Honda Sensing, a suite of active safety features that includes automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

For its part, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes with all-wheel drive as standard. Like the CR-V Hybrid, it’s very well equipped with convenience and safety technology. It also enjoys a stellar reputation for dependability and strong resale values. There’s also the outdoorsy Woodland Edition.
This race is tough to call. The CR-V is a fresher design but has a higher starting price and is the less efficient of the two. On the other hand, it’s loaded with technology, has more rear legroom, and holds class-leading cargo volume.
