Americans bought 10.6% more electric vehicles (EVs) in the first quarter of 2025 than during the same period in 2024, according to Kelley Blue Book data.

Roughly 7.5% of all vehicles sold from January to March were electric, up half a percent from last year’s total.

The increase came despite resistance to EVs from a new White House. The new Trump administration has paused federal funding for EV chargers (a move now under review from several lawsuits) and said it wants to end a $7,500 tax credit program meant to promote sales of American-made EVs.

Only Congress could end the program.

New EVs Pick Up Sales Pace

The sales pace is improving as more electric cars reach the market. In the first quarter of 2024, General Motors had a small selection of EVs for sale, led by the since-canceled Chevy Bolt. In 2025’s first three months, GM had a fleet of EVs on offer, including the inexpensive Chevy Equinox EV, the midsize Chevy Blazer EV, the Silverado EV pickup, the luxury Cadillac Lyriq, and even the off-road-oriented GMC Hummer EV.

Stellantis launched the first EVs under the Jeep and Dodge brands. Honda’s Prologue appeared, selling enough to break into the top five best-selling EVs in the first quarter.

    Tesla Sales Take a Hit

The market leader, however, had a rough quarter. Tesla still sold the best-selling EV, its Model Y. But sales of the model fell 34% year-over-year amid controversy over CEO Elon Musk’s political activities that has led to protests at dealerships and factories.

Tesla sales peaked in February of 2023, and are in steep decline today. Sales in the first quarter were down 26% from that peak.
