Amid War, Sudan’s Lawyers Live and Work in Exile, Torn From Their Families


ALN and Matouk Bassiouny lawyers have been forced to make swift and painful decisions over the past two years, relocating their teams in Sudan to neighboring countries as violence engulfed the capital city of Khartoum.

When attacks intensified in 2024, Egyptian firm Matouk Bassiouny moved its Sudanese partner from Khartoum to Cairo. Other lawyers were transferred to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
