General Motors has launched a voluntary recall of 877,710 full-size trucks and SUVs from model years 2021-2024 because of repeated engine failures. The company has also ordered dealers not to sell the remaining 2024 models in their inventory until they can be repaired. Many dealers have 2025 models in stock, which are not included in the recall.

All of the recalled models use a 6.2-liter V8 engine.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) usually announces recalls. This time, GM announced the move itself before the government published any relevant information. But the move grows out of an NHTSA investigation begun in January.

The agency began a probe into complaints that bearing rods in the 6.2-liter V8 could fail, leading to engine seizure. GM decided to voluntarily recall the engines rather than wait for the investigation results.

In a statement, the company says the move will “resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson adds.

Dealerships inspect the engines and, depending on what technicians find, may repair the rods or replace the engine entirely. They’ll also give every engine a higher-viscosity oil and a new oil filter and fill cap, even if they find nothing wrong.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
