Among midsize luxury sedans, the 2025 Genesis G80 and 2025 Volvo S90 present a couple of intriguing choices. The G80 is perhaps the most well-rounded of the two, while packing a lot of standard equipment for the money. The S90, however, puts comfort toward the top of its priorities (that’s not a bad thing — we love how this Volvo sedan glides over road imperfections with ease) and comes with plenty of space for rear passengers, including a class-leading 40.4 inches of rear legroom.

Let’s dive into the highlights of the G80 and S90 to find out if one has an edge over the other.

    2025 Genesis G80

    2025 Genesis G80

This second generation of the Genesis G80 launched for 2021, so it’s time for a mid-generation refresh. The exterior design has been spruced up, along with a few changes in the cabin — the most dramatic being the 27-inch OLED display. The headlights, grille, and front air intakes receive minor tweaks. Crucially, Genesis has reinstated physical controls in the center console for volume, tuning, and temperature adjustment. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto becomes standard, the infotainment system is capable of over-the-air updates, USB-C ports replace USB-A, the Digital Key feature is now compatible with Apple iPhones, a fingerprint reader becomes available, and the 360-degree camera system (in Sport Prestige trim) has a screen capture function; owners can access this remotely to check on their car’s surroundings. The previous Lexicon audio system is replaced by a Bang & Olufsen setup. The cabin also gains 64-color ambient lighting that’s set into more places. And the 3.5T Sport trim has been discontinued.

    The base engine is a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder unit, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5T employs a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6.

    Genesis G80 Highlights

All-wheel drive: We think it was a smart move by Genesis to make all-wheel drive (AWD) standard in the G80, giving it an advantage over rivals who charge extra, and appealing to some customers who might otherwise have only considered an SUV.

Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system: We’ll admit it, we were big fans of the old Lexicon stuff. But we doubt that even the pickiest audiophile with bat-like hearing would complain about the new 18-speaker/1,400-watt setup available in the 2025 G80.

Highway Driving Assist 2: This standard feature uses adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras, and lane-keeping assistance to provide partially autonomous highway driving. In our experience, Genesis has wonderfully effective driver aid technology.

Outstanding warranty: The Genesis G80 also scores significant points thanks to its excellent warranty coverage. A 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty is paired with 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage. Three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance are also included; the Volvo S90 shares this perk.

There are faster and sportier alternatives, but the 2025 Volvo S90 excels at providing a hushed and serene ride. We’ve found it to be one of the most comfortable in this midsize luxury sedan class. The standard engine is a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit sending 295 hp to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

This year, the erstwhile Ultimate trim becomes Ultra. And the Recharge part is dropped from the T8 plug-in hybrid’s official moniker.

    Volvo S90 Highlights

T8 plug-in hybrid: Most S90 buyers will be satisfied with the entry-level engine. It hustles this sizable sedan from a standstill to 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. However, unlike the Genesis G80, the S90 can also be had as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The T8 powertrain uses the same turbocharged and supercharged gasoline engine, then adds a pair of electric motors. Total output is 455 hp, dropping the zero-to-60-mph time below five seconds. It also delivers 38 miles of electric-only range.

Seating comfort: Once you’re in the Volvo S90, you won’t want to get out. The S90’s seats provide exceptional comfort and support. We suggest Volvo start marketing them for living rooms, offices, movie theaters, etc. We’re joking (kind of), but that’s how good these seats are.

Adaptive air suspension: Available in the top Ultra trim, this makes the S90 float down the road in even greater comfort. When switched to Sport drive mode, this suspension hunkers the S90 down for increased body control and quicker steering responses.

Pilot Assist: Volvo’s take on partially autonomous driving, Pilot Assist uses a combination of adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and various other sensors. The result is a system we’ve found great for taking the stress out of long-distance drives.

    Similarities

These superb vehicles are two classy and refined choices among midsize luxury sedans. Both cars’ interiors are high-quality. And each one is adept at dealing with city traffic or cruising sedately for hour after hour.

    Conclusion

We don’t think you could go wrong by visiting several local dealerships and taking the Genesis G80 and Volvo S90 for test drives. The G80 feels a little fresher and more modern inside and out. It’s more engaging to drive, although we can’t fault the impeccable comfort of the slightly softer, more easy-going S90.
