If you’re the type who dreads spring cleaning season when it comes around every year, listen up: There’s a way to reset your home for the season without putting in quite so much elbow grease on your end. Whether you’re decluttering, deep cleaning, or simply looking to get your housework under control before the new season is in full swing, hiring a pro can not only help you save time, but maybe your sanity, too.

“It is recommended to establish a regular cleaning schedule, especially with a professional,” says Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid. “They have the tools, products, and techniques to ensure your indoor cleaning is done correctly.”

This is especially helpful when it comes to intimidating jobs or hard-to-reach areas like organizing your highest shelves, washing windows, or cleaning out gutters. They can also help eliminate allergens and bacteria from your home environment. No matter what your spring cleaning looks like, hiring a pro ensures the job will be completed with the right tools, techniques, and products to ensure a properly cleaned and organized home. Here Mock shares her top tips for hiring out your spring cleaning.

    • Marla Mock is the president of Molly Maid, a Neighborly company.

When You Should Hire a Professional for Spring Cleaning

If you’re not sure which tasks you need expert assistance with, there are a few clues that can help you along the way—starting with the size and scope of your project.

“The larger the space and the more items or detail involved, the more helpful it is to bring in help,” Mock says. “If the project feels overwhelming or includes labor-intensive or specialty cleaning tasks, hiring professionals can make the process more manageable and efficient.”

Mock says it’s important to remember that professional cleaners can be used for either a one-time deep cleaning or ongoing maintenance. The same goes for organizers who can help you get your space in shape with a complete overhaul, while also offering refreshes anywhere from weekly to annually, depending on your needs.

Before you get started on your spring cleaning journey—especially if you’re hiring a professional—you need to get organized. “Prioritize your needs and set goals for what you want to accomplish,” Mock instructs. Make your investment a worthwhile one, and you’ll feel a total sense of relief once the job is done and you can enjoy your home throughout the spring and summer without all the clutter and mess.

What If You Want to Do Some of the Work Yourself?

“You don’t need to hand off the entire job,” Mock says. “Many people handle simpler tasks like decluttering or organizing and bring in professionals for time-consuming or more difficult cleaning.”

This strategy keeps your spring cleaning to-dos manageable: Tackle the jobs you’re up for and hire out the others. Mock also suggests handling more minor cleaning and organizing tasks yourself like organizing cabinets, wiping down surfaces, and cleaning out the fridge. “Then professional can do the ‘heavy lifting’ with a deeper and more thorough cleaning, such as deep cleaning bathrooms, carpets, and kitchens.”

How to Hire a Professional to Help with Spring Cleaning

While spring cleaning can seem daunting, figuring out how to hire the right professional for the job can, too. Mock says to keep it simple by researching local cleaning or organizing services, depending on your needs, and then requesting a quote. Read reviews and gather quotes from a number of businesses before you decide on the group for the job. And remember, this can and should be a totally personalized experience. Explain exactly what you need done, whether it’s a complete overhaul or a more zone-centric treatment. “Most companies offer customizable services, so you can focus on the areas that need it most,” she says.
