2025’s Modular Sofa Moment Is the Functional Living Trend I Didn’t Know I Needed

2025’s Modular Sofa Moment Is the Functional Living Trend I Didn’t Know I Needed

At its core, good interior design is all about balancing functionality with aesthetics, creating spaces that are as practical as they are beautiful. Over the past few years, finding clever ways to maximize every inch of any living space has been brought to the forefront in design. As a result, multi-purpose furniture—namely, modular furniture—is becoming the top choice.

If you, like me, have seen an ad for modular sofas on your any of your social feeds recently, you know that modular furniture is having a moment—and with its flexibility and versatility, especially for large-scale pieces like sofas, that makes sense. You can easily rearrange or add modules based on your evolving needs and budget. Plus, these sofas offer additional features and benefits, such as removable and washable covers and hidden storage.

Modular Furniture

Modular furniture consists of individual sections, or modules, that can be arranged and rearranged in various configurations based on your needs and individual setup.

“People are looking for adaptable solutions that can evolve with their lifestyles,” says Evan Clabots, vice president of product development at Cozey. “There’s also a growing desire for furniture that fits modern living, including urban spaces, multi-use rooms, and even minimalist aesthetics. Modular designs empower people to customize their space in a way that reflects how they actually live.”

I jumped on the modular sofa trend a couple of months ago, and it’s been a true game changer in my home. Here’s my testimony (along with expert opinions) on why these pieces are worth the hype.

  • Evan Clabots is the vice president of product development and innovation at Cozey, a furniture company specializing in modular designs, particularly sofas.
  • Ania Agárdy is a Miami-based interior designer specializing in luxury residential projects.

Modular vs. Traditional Furniture

Buying new furniture is a big deal—so if you’re not sure whether it’s worth following this trend, let me be the first to assure you that modular furniture has the designer stamp of approval.

“We have always used it in our designs and continue to do so for many reasons,” says Miami-based interior designer Ania Agárdy. “From a design perspective, modular furniture offers both versatility and functionality. Their customizable layout allows you to adapt the seating arrangement to fit the space, whether you are working with a small apartment or an open-concept living area.”

Compared to traditional furniture, modular furniture has a few key benefits that make it popular with designers and homeowners alike. The designers I spoke with consistently mentioned modular furniture’s flexibility and ease of delivery and transportation. Getting full-sized sofas and sectionals through doorways, narrow staircases, and elevators can be a real problem that designers run into all the time with their clients—modular designs solve that problem, making delivery and transportation a no-brainer.

Agárdy also notes that modular furniture offers a stylish, contemporary aesthetic that can be seamlessly integrated into various design styles—often simple with clean lines, making them timeless. When it comes to styling a modular sofa, she offers the following advice: “It’s all about balance, layering, and enhancing the shape. The right coffee table plays an important role—choose one that is low profile, or choose an ottoman. It should be round or soft-edged to balance the often boxy form of the sectional.”

My Experience Swapping to a Modular Sofa

So, is it worth ditching the old, traditional sofa for the modular pieces you’re seeing online? After months of humming and hawing about whether or not to add one to my own home, we finally pulled the trigger a couple of months ago and added a Cozey sectional to our living room. After two months, I can confidently say that the switch has been worth it—there are a few reasons I love it, beginning with the arrival.

The delivery and assembly were convenient and easy. Each sofa module arrived in its own box, and all the boxes were delivered to my house simultaneously. The boxes were light enough for me to carry into the house by myself, and assembly was just as simple. After watching a quick tutorial on the Cozey site, I assembled the entire couch (with the exception of the last module) before my husband got home. Would I recommend putting together a whole sectional alone with only the “help” of a toddler and a nine-month old? No, but it is possible.

In terms of its features, I’m a big fan of the built-in storage. After researching, we decided to go with Cozey’s Neptune sofa, which offers a storage or sofa bed option in each module. Since we didn’t need the extra sleep space, we chose the storage option. Now, it’s where all of our extra blankets and throws live—a complete lifesaver.

Removable and washable covers were a non-negotiable when we started searching for a new sofa. We have two small kids, a cat, and a dog that sleep on our couch, so the covers need to be washable, full stop. The Cozey sofas checked that box, a massive advantage against traditional sofas (especially for busy families).

Ultimately, I know that when we eventually upsize to a larger home, we won’t need to buy a new couch to outfit our space. Our current living room is small, but we can always purchase more modules to reconfigure our Neptune sofa if we ever need additional seating, which gives me (and my wallet) peace of mind.

It’s been two months since we switched to a modular sofa, and I can’t see myself returning to the traditional counterpart. In a world of evolving design trends, modular furniture is more than just a fleeting moment. It’s furniture reimagined to solve many of the common issues busy individuals and families face on a daily basis. If you’re on the edge about modular furniture, let this be your sign to give it a chance this year.
