P&G Spruce and Sunday Weed Warrior are two brands focused on products that are hard on weeds but easy on people, pets, and the environment. I tested their grass and weed killers head-to-head and chose a favorite, although both performed admirably without using harsh chemicals.

Sunday Weed Warrior vs P&G Spruce Weed and Grass Killer

Sunday Weed Warrior is a non-selective weed killer, targeting grass, weeds, moss, and algae with ammoniated soap of fatty acids. The OMRI-listed herbicidal soap dehydrates weeds, causing cellular damage that eventually leads to their death.

P&G Spruce Weed & Grass Killer is a non-selective herbicide made of people and pet-safe ingredients like water, essential oils, and surfactant to dehydrate weeds and grasses. It comes in different container types, and I tested the built-in sprayer model. You can buy refills so you don’t have to purchase a sprayer every time you need more weed and grass killer.

The manufacturer advertises that weeds start to die within minutes to an hour. And yes, that’s true. I tested it on grass (growing through the gravel in a driveway), dandelions, moss, and an unidentified weed that I wanted to eliminate. The grass discolored within an hour, and the rest looked worse for wear within 3 hours.

After 24 hours, the dandelions, moss, grass, and the unidentified weed browned and died. So performance-wise, I was impressed. The grass started to green a little after 3 weeks, but only a few wayward blades.

The built-in sprayer was impressive. Installation was quick and easy, and it can lock for safety. I wasn’t hunched over or manually pumping, either. Some users report that it can take up to a minute to start spraying, but I had it working within 10 seconds. I recently tested pet-friendly weed killers, and several had built-in sprayers. The P&G Spruce sprayer is by far my favorite and the most effective. Additionally, it came with a hand-spray model with a strong stream, great for targeting weeds hidden within the grass that I didn’t want to kill.

    Overall rating: 4.5/5

Applying and Testing Sunday Weed Warrior

I sprayed Sunday Weed Warrior’s ready-to-use spray on grass, dandelions, and moss. It was easy to use on small areas, like targeting dandelions or a patch of moss. The dandelions and grass discolored within 2 hours, but after 24 hours, they were brown and dead. The moss took longer, but after about 48 hours, it darkened and died.

I tried it on a large gravel driveway with grass pushing through, but the spray bottle dripped, and my hand fatigued quickly. Sunday offers a more concentrated version with a built-in sprayer, which would probably work better for covering large areas.

On the downside, it took a lot of spray to affect the plants, which can get pricey if you have a serious weed problem. Additionally, the grass (not the dandelions or moss) started to green again after about 3 weeks. A second application browned it again, but it may take regular application to keep the weeds gone.

This formula is pet- and people-safe. However, it’s toxic to aquatic invertebrates and shouldn’t be applied directly to water. It’s best to use it only when it won’t rain for at least 24 hours.

    Overall rating: 4/5

Weed Killer Results and Overall Verdict

The P&G Spruce edged out the Sunday Weed Warrior for the ease of use and the power of the formula. It hit weeds and moss harder, and the sprayer made it super easy to use.

However, either product will kill weeds without harming pets or people. Plus, they both smell a lot better than chemical herbicides.
