Wood staircases, though beautiful, can be slippery—and no one wants to worry about sliding on their way to get a midnight snack. If you have pets or children, you’re likely on even higher alert for accidents. So, to stop them in their tracks, we tested and tried stair tread carpets to find the very best.

During our testing, we tried stair treads of all materials, constructions, and colors to see how they measured up. The ones that won us over had adhesive, sticky backings and never budged, making a more secure stepping space for our houseguests.

And bonus: None of the stair treads we recommend damaged our floors when peeling and reapplying, which is something to prioritize when buying stair tread carpets. We recommend these easy-to-install options for a cost-effective alternative to carpeting and stair runners.

Our favorite stair tread carpet overall goes to the Cosy Homeer Stair Treads, which stayed intact despite daily visits from our German Shepherd and Blue Heeler dogs. They perfectly accommodate our awkward wood stairs (oddly shaped thanks to an arched staircase) and are thick, durable, and soft. We can see these lasting for years to come with little maintenance.

Installation was simple: they recommended using a hair dryer to help bond the adhesive to the stairs, so we followed suit. When lifting a tread to readjust, there was no sticky residue left behind, and it didn’t remove any varnish from the stairs.

    What Our Tester Said

“The stair treads are thick and durable, yet feel soft and pleasant underfoot. I do feel the traction of the treads offers me more confidence on the stairs.”

We immediately noticed how comfortable the treads feel underfoot, and we’re pretty pleased to report that they haven’t shifted a bit during use. These treads are very durable—we haven’t seen any damage from dog claws or wear and tear. The treads still feel soft, and they fluff back up easily during cleaning.

We noticed a bit of lifting around the corner edges after testing, but we easily stuck them back down without an issue. They pilled ever-so-slightly, but we attribute that to the large amount of dog foot (or rather, paw) traffic.

    Dimensions: 9 x 28 inches | Material: Polyester and rubber | Number of Treads: 4, 7, 10, or 15

The cost of adding carpet to your stairs can be sticker-shocking, but coming in under $50 for 15 pieces, we can’t recommend the Kooteta Non-Slip Carpet Treads enough. While testing these on our staircase, we loved the chic navy blue color and added slip-resistance, especially when our 6-year-old granddaughter comes over (which is at least three days a week).

The stair tread is made of polyester, which we don’t love, but the texture provides a secure grip for walking. They’re comfortable to step on, even barefoot, and add much-needed traction to our slippery wood stairs.

    What Our Tester Said

“Even though things can get risky ordering from Amazon, this product proved to be one of the good ones. It’s a fun, simple-enough task to have the kids help you complete.”

The stair treads do an excellent job of staying in place underneath foot traffic—none of them shifted or moved even an inch. The bottom adhesives keep them in place, and when removing a tread, it didn’t lose any stickiness, plus, the floor underneath wasn’t ruined or impacted.

One downside is how quickly water soaks into the surface, but even though these aren’t waterproof, they dried pretty easily when we did a spill test. It soaked into the surface quickly. Whenever any debris accumulated, we used a handheld vacuum to get lint and hair off with ease.

    Dimensions: 8 x 30 inches | Material: Polyester and rubber | Number of Treads: 4, 7, or 15

Who said stair tread carpets have to look frumpy? We added these to our brand-new townhouse and feel they’ve only enhanced the cozy, neutral look we established.

During testing, we never noticed shifting or moving of the stair treads after sticking them in place. We give them tens all around for security, design, and price.

We attached these to our pine stair treads and felt no remorse—they never matched the rest of the flooring, so we were eager to cover them. They are super comfortable without being too shaggy, and they make a big difference in comfort when coming up and down the stairs.

    What Our Tester Said

“I absolutely love the ease of installation—getting these on the stairs took all of 10 minutes. They added a really cozy look and feel to the otherwise bare staircase.”

Installing these was a breeze. The treads have an adhesive on the bottom, like a big sticker. It was easy to pick one up after sticking it down to readjust, as long as we didn’t press too hard. We did this a few times to ensure the one we placed down was even with the one before, and the floor underneath is unharmed.

Because of the light, sandy color, we chose to vacuum these more often than we typically washed the stair floors previously. Though they are light, they don’t show dirt and debris too blatantly, so this was more of a clean-freak homeowner’s choice rather than a necessity. But, we felt it was worth mentioning.

If your vacuum has upholstery attachments, we recommend using them to clean the stair tread carpets. It’s easier than dragging the vacuum up and over them all.

    What We Like

    • Comfortable fabric texture

    • Great traction for pets and humans

    • Multiple easy cleaning options

Life happens on your stairs (like spills, stains, and soils), so a washable stair tread is advantageous. We love these Ojia Carpet Stair Treads for that easy-to-clean reason, a necessity in our four-cat, two-dog household. They are not only stylish, but also offer great traction for us and our pets alike.

These stay secure thanks to a removable, rubber backing, rather than the adhesive on our best overall and best bullnose selections. They did a great job staying in place—there was some shifting over time, but not enough to be a hazard or issue.

    What Our Tester Said

“I like that these treads are easily maneuverable, have multiple methods of cleaning, and don’t adhere down. The movability and the ease of cleaning really are a bonus for people with pets or kids.”

These can be vacuumed, swept, mopped, and machine-washed, oh my! We did put the machine washable claim to the test, and we’re happy to report that they held up great. We found these comfortable to walk on both barefoot and in socks, and the extra security of the treads was lovely.

Our pets seemed to enjoy the stair tread carpets as well—our cats took to napping and hanging out on them, while our older dog, who typically acts nervous on the wood stairs, goes down with much more confidence.

Whether your household has pets or doesn’t, these are a great, easy-to-clean option for a little extra traction.

    Dimensions: 20 x 32 inches or 31 x 31 inches | Material: Neoprene | Number of Treads: 1, 4, 7, 10, or 15

Though adhesive is great for a permanent stair covering solution, sometimes, you want to enhance traction without the commitment. We think the L.L.Bean Everyspace Stair Treads perfectly fit the bill with their rubbery, non-slip material that stays put when you need it to, but are easily movable for cleaning.

Installing these was as easy as taking them out of the box and placing them on the stairs. We liked the look of them even better after they had a few days to settle, and loved them ever since.

    What Our Tester Said

“I like how well they stay in place and are an easy solution that doesn’t involve a professional carpet install. I also like how easy they are to clean and place on the stairs.”

We’re happy to report that these securely stayed in place when going up and down the stairs, though over a few days, we saw a centimeter of shifting.

That said, we didn’t find this bothersome and put them back in place after cleaning the floor. We also noticed a bit of pulling and pilling, but this could be thanks to our dog.

Over the testing period, the treads attracted a lot of dog hair and dust bunnies, so we vacuumed them periodically and found it was super easy to do so, mostly because they were easy to remove and re-place into position.

    Dimensions: 8.5 x 30 inches | Material: 24-ounce recycled polyester and rubber | Number of Treads: 4

    Another Option We Tested

Symple Stuff Machine Washable Slip Resistant Stair Tread

    The Spruce

These are another machine-washable option, which is an excellent feature. When testing, we noticed that these moved around a bit, especially when a large dog visited. Since they aren’t unbudgingly secure, we recommend them for households without children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues.

The best stair tread carpets we tested are the Cosy Homeer Stair Treads. They are incredibly comfortable underfoot and enhance the traction of the stairs, even in a home with two dogs. Another great option is the Pure Era Bullnose Carpet Stair Treads, which easily combine comfort, stability, and style for a nice price.

How We Tested Stair Tread Carpets

To find the best stair tread carpets for your home, we researched top options and scored them on quality, texture, ease of cleaning, durability, and value.

Quality: We tried different treads of different materials, from polyester to rubber, and took note of the quality of each. Ones we liked best felt high-quality and durable as well as cushiony.

    The Spruce

Texture: Over the testing period, we walked both barefoot and with socks on the treads to test how soft, comfortable, and non-slip they really are. Our pets and family members took a spin on the stairs and gave their thoughts, too. We only recommended options that we felt greatly reduced our risk of slipping and didn’t significantly budge.

    The Spruce

Ease of Cleaning: We used both regular and handheld vacuums to rid the treads of inevitable debris, dust, and hair. Most options on our list are actually machine washable, so we took those for a spin through the machine to see how well they held up.

    The Spruce

Durability: After cleaning, stepping, and stomping, we took note of how durable the options are and awarded points for durability. If there were any snags, pulls, or other imperfections, we noted this.

    The Spruce

Overall Value: Based on the price of the treads, we determined the overall value of the stair tread carpets and made sure they were worth the price.

What to Look for in Stair Tread Carpets

The Right Size and Style for Your Space

Before exploring stair tread options, measure your steps to ensure a proper fit. Since stair treads generally only cover the middle of each step, you’ll need about an inch of clearance on the top and bottom length of the step.

It’s also important to note that tread widths will vary by manufacturer. If you have narrower stairs or those with different dimensions, a trimmable option, such as the Kooteta Non-Slip Carpet Stair Treads, our best budget pick, allows you to customize the fit.

Many stair treads come in various colors and patterns, allowing you to match your home’s existing aesthetic. Textured or patterned treads can add visual interest and a touch of elegance, while bolder colors make a striking focal point.

Our best bullnose pick, the Pure Era Bullnose Carpet Stair Treads, comes in 17 colors and patterns, enhancing the look of your staircase while protecting its edges from damage.

    The Material They’re Made Of

When shopping for stair treads, consider the material they’re made of. Rubber stair treads are highly resistant to wet-weather conditions, providing reliable traction in rain or snow.

Indoor stair treads are often made from synthetic fibers, such as polyester or polypropylene, which are not only durable but easy to clean and maintain.

Some options, like the Symple Stuff Machine Washable Slip Resistant Stair Tread, are designed to mimic the feel of carpet, creating soft cushioning underfoot while absorbing sound and reducing the risk of slips and falls. For that reason, indoor stair treads are particularly beneficial in homes with children or elderly residents.

Does It Have a Nonslip Backing?

Almost all the stair treads on this list have a nonslip backing, which keeps them securely in place when you walk across them. This backing is typically made of rubber or a sticky adhesive that grips the surface you place it on.

The products on this list with adhesive or “sticky” backings are typically made from lighter synthetic materials. Although the nonslip surface will likely wear down over time, most treads deliver long-lasting performance and can be repositioned as needed.

Alternatively, double-sided carpet tape can be used for a more secure grip, especially on sleek surfaces like marble. Our best overall pick, the Cosy Homeer Non-Slip Carpet Stair Treads, can withstand up to 30 machine washes before the nonslip backing wears down, according to the manufacturer.

    Why Trust The Spruce?

This article was written by Mia Ingui, an editor at The Spruce who just moved into her first home and tested out the Pure Era Bullnose Carpet Stair Treads herself. She loves them, citing them as “the least painful installation of anything in her new house.”

To compile the rest of the list, she scoured the testing insights from our team of editors and testers and made recommendations based on their feedback. Only the best of the best made the list, ones that have great quality, non-slip features, and value for the price.
