Move over, oceans. It’s European lake season. And while Lake Como, Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva might get most of the love from American travelers searching for a waterway getaway, it’s time to look somewhere a little unexpected: France’s Lake Bourget (Lac du Bourget). This dreamy alpine escape is the sleeper hit destined to make your vacation dreams come true in 2025 and beyond.

The Belle Époque town of Aix-Les-Bains sits on the lake’s scenic shore. Michelle Sweeney Lain, head of 1786, a luxe travel agency specializing in the Alps, adds, “Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget offer a serene escape that beautifully balances nature, culture and well-being.” The region is anchored by Lac du Bourget, France’s largest natural freshwater lake, which is often referred to as a hidden gem in comparison to its more famous neighbor, Lake Annecy. (Annecy, known as “the little Venice of the Alps,” is famous for its stunning canals.) “It draws significant tourist crowds, especially in the peak seasons, making it feel bustling and commercialized. In contrast, Lac du Bourget remains wonderfully authentic and less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience,” says Lain. Visitors can look forward to a bevy of outdoor activities, cultural landmarks, upscale hotels and divine eateries. Check out our ultimate Jetset guide for Aix-Les-Bains.

What to Know and When to Go

There are two major international airports one hour or so away from Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget: Geneva, Switzerland and Lyon, France. If you’re adding Aix to a longer trip, it’s also quite convenient to fly to Paris from the US, spend some time in the posh capital, then take the fast train (two hours) to Lyon and drive further to the Lac du Bourget region. For weather, the best time to visit is June to September, but we love a sleepy spring vacation too.

    Where to Stay

For the most luxurious of weekends, park yourself at the petite Hotel L’Incomparable in nearby Tresserve (roughly two miles away from Aix). Lain shares, “The Hôtel Incomparable in Tresserve is simply exquisite. Nestled in my husband’s hometown, this boutique hotel offers a blend of luxury and intimacy.” She notes the exceptional cuisine at the Michelin-starred eatery and serene spa as key highlights of the pretty, lakeside property. “Staying here feels like being in your own elegant home, hosting a few close friends,” the travel advisor adds. Don’t skip a session in the fishbowl sauna, complete with amazing lake views.

    Spahhhhh

Aix is known as a storied spa town, with a rich history as a renowned spa destination, once attracting nobles, royalty and the rich and famous for its thermal baths and casino. Lain expands, “The thermal baths in France, including Aix, were historically used as preventive medicine, particularly for treating rheumatism with three-week therapeutic stints. While the number of them has significantly declined—only about a third of its former levels—the thermal baths remain a unique and authentic experience.” For a taste of this tradition, visit the Thermes Chevalley, which offers modern spa facilities in a historic setting. A signature treatment to try is the thermal mud wrap, which showcases the healing properties of the region’s mineral-rich waters. “Plan to soak in the thermal pools, then enjoy a relaxing massage to fully unwind,” Lain suggests.

    Wine and Dine

There’s perhaps no greater French pursuit than the slow enjoyment of a great meal. Luckily, the Lake Bourget area has plenty for hungry visitors, from Michelin meals to casual alpine fare. There are three one-star Michelin spots around the lake, including the eatery at Hôtel Incomparable. Lain loves Lamartine, calling it “a true personal favorite” that makes you feel quite at home (albeit a super luxurious one). Another amazing spot on the lakeshore is La Parfumerie. “No, you won’t be buying your favorite scent, it is a small haven of food goodness,” says Lain. She notes the small but farm fresh menu that is sure to delight. Another great restaurant option is Zélie inside the Muira Hotel. “Named after the first owner’s wife, lunch and dinner is fantastic, but go for brunch on Sundays, a wonderful experience,” Lain recommends. Going towards Chambery, “I wouldn’t eat anywhere else but Bistro du Verger chez Marc. It is almost like walking into ‘Cheers,’ the TV show. The food is completely homemade, the waitresses are friendly and funny and the wine choices [are] surprising. Here I always finish with un Moelleux au Chocolat,” she explains.

    Village Charm

Beyond the main town of Aix-Les-Bains, travelers should plan a day trip to the nearby enclave of Chanaz. Often called “The Venice of Savoie,” this charming, picturesque, canal-side village begs to be explored at a leisurely pace. “Stroll through the quaint streets, visit the historic old mill and explore the antique store and novelty shops for delightful teas, coffees and chocolates,” Lain notes. (There’s even a honey barge!) “Renting an electric boat is an unforgettable experience—gliding along the canal and arriving at the mouth of Lac du Bourget is simply magical,” she says. To extend your stay overnight, try Le Doux Nid (The Soft Nest), a cozy and quaint spot right on the canal. Alternatively, just a short distance away, you can stay at Le Château de la Mar and treat yourself to an incredible dining experience at Les Morainières, a Michelin-starred restaurant. “While in the area, don’t miss Jongieux, a tiny village renowned for its exceptional wines, breathtaking views and welcoming wineries such as Domaine Carrel et Senger . . . it’s the perfect complement to a peaceful trip to Chanaz,” shares Lain.

    Outdoor Adventures

Due to its prime location on France’s largest natural lake, Aix is an ideal spot to enjoy the great outdoors. “For hiking, two of my favorites include Le Dent du Chat, a thrilling hike offering panoramic views of the lake, and La Forêt de Corsuet, perfect for a serene walk through lush forest trails,” Lain suggests. “Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try the Via Ferrata with one of our experienced guides, a unique climbing route secured with cables and ladders for exhilarating views,” she says. Other great options are La Chambotte and Le Revard, each offering breathtaking landscapes. After your hike, cool off with a refreshing swim in Lac du Bourget. For stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking, try Takamaka Aix-les-Bains for quality rentals and a fantastic experience on the water.

    Cultural Attractions

Visitors can also dig a little deeper into Aix-Les-Bains, beyond its spa culture, lovely dining and outdoor offerings. “For history buffs, a trip to Le Plateau des Glières, a significant site for the French Resistance, is both moving and fascinating,” Lain shares. Pair this with a visit to a historic châteaux like Ripaille or the enchanting Hautecombe Abbey for a dose of culture on Lac du Bourget.

In a world where overrun destinations are the norm, Aix-les-Bains offers a rare, serene luxury that feels like a well-kept secret—one that promises not just a getaway, but an unforgettable, rejuvenating alpine escape.
