A top broker in the Hamptons is joining Compass from Hedgerow Exclusive Properties.
Terry Cohen is exiting the brokerage three years after joining as an agent and partner, Compass announced in a press release on Monday. Cohen is leaving behind her team, which ranked among the 20 highest-producing teams in the luxury enclave last year.
Cohen joined Hedgerow after more than a decade with Saunders & Associates, where she served as senior vice president. She founded her team at the firm in 2015, before departing with her then-four-person cohort in 2022. At the time, her team included an operations manager and agents Jon Vaccari and Bayard Fenwick. Fenwick is still listed as an agent with Hedgerow, while Vaccari left the firm earlier this year to join Elliman’s top-producing Noble Black Team in the Hamptons.
Last year, between June 2023 and June 2024, Cohen’s team closed $84 million in sales across just six deals $1 million and above.
At Compass, Cohen is joined by her new assistant, Ashley McDermott, who was formerly with Bespoke Real Estate. Through a Compass spokesperson, Cohen said she didn’t think she needed a team anymore, “with good collaboration within a firm.”
“We wish Terry nothing but the best on her next endeavor and look forward to continuing to collaborate and conduct business with her in the future,” Hedgerow wrote in a statement.
It’s unclear whether Cohen will bring any of her listings with her from Hedgerow. Before her departure, she represented the children of the late McKinsey executive Robert O’Block when they listed his four-acre estate in East Hampton in April for just under $42 million. The compound at 24 and 36 Jeffreys Lane is still listed with Hedgerow.
“I’m exactly where I want to be in my career, and I view change as an opportunity for growth,”
Cohen said in the press release announcing her departure, which she characterized as a tough decision. “Change isn’t scary for me. I welcome it.”
Compass placed second in The Real Deal’s ranking of the top brokerages in the Hamptons between June 2023 and June 2024 with $1.45 billion in closed sales across 316 deals worth $1 million or more. Hedgerow, a boutique firm, finished eighth with $262 million across 21 deals.
