Santa Monica deploys an ecommerce platform to handle e-procurement

The City of Santa Monica has launched a centralized ecommerce and e-procurement platform designed to streamline how city departments purchase goods and services.

The system, developed by technology startup Glass, consolidates city purchasing into a single interface, replacing fragmented processes that relied on multiple vendor portals, email communications, and manual tracking. The platform runs on Glass’ G-Commerce software, tailored for the public sector.

Santa Monica e-procurement platform adoption

Since its phased rollout began in May 2024, more than 10 city departments — including public works, fire, and police — have adopted the system. City procurement records show the platform is expected to facilitate $3 million in annual transactions, primarily through government-issued credit cards.

The platform includes tools for budget control, automated approvals, and real-time tracking of purchasing activity. It also provides analytics dashboards for visibility into vendor usage and category-level spending. Support services such as live chat, a help center, and phone assistance are also available to users.

Glass has reported that its G-Commerce platform is currently used by over 120 government agencies and has processed more than $6.5 million in transactions. The company secured a contract through the General Services Administration’s commercial platforms program in 2024.

City officials say the new platform is improving purchasing compliance, transparency, and operational efficiency. It supports mobile and desktop access and integrates with vendor catalogs via single sign-on.

Santa Monica is one of the first municipalities to implement the system citywide.
