The Land of Enchantment has a remarkable pueblo-style estate up for grabs.

Formerly the home of Spanish officer Francisco de la Peña, the New Mexico abode dates back to 1845. Pena bought it that year and lived there with his family until 1925, when it sold to artist Frank Applegate, who fell in love with Santa Fe’s culture and landscapes. Tucked into the city’s Historic Eastside, it covers 1.78 acres of land with a main house and guest casita. Darlene Streit of Sotheby’s International Realty – Santa Fe Brokerage holds the $9.9 million listing known for its national historic status.

Those familiar with the De La Peña House will note that it flitted on and off the market for years now. Records show it listed for $4.75 million in 2009. Following a trio of price changes throughout the years, it later popped on the market for $14 million in 2022, then was removed in 2023 before returning this year at an asking price of $4.1 million less. The update meant to “honor its past” while integrating modern luxury factors into the price hike, but its prominence and variety of amenities make it a national treasure, nonetheless.

A gravel driveway leads to the estate’s outer courtyard, where the main residence’s warm brown stucco facade seamlessly blends into the natural settings. At least two rustic doors open into the private central courtyard, where yucca plants sit alongside a stone pathway. Owners step directly into the living room when entering the mansion-sized home with 10,186 square feet of living space. Exposed wood beam ceilings, a brick-clad fireplace, and ample lounge space create a comfortable vibe for hosting guests here, alongside the kitchen and two dining areas.

The kitchen sits between both of the latter spaces, housing dual ovens and a French door pantry dressed in Tiffany blue, plus a marble backsplash. Further in on the first floor, residents can take a load off in the family room with navy blue walls and large wood-frame windows, or one of two sitting rooms. Three ensuite bedrooms are accessed on the level, too, including the primary suite with a private sitting area, two fireplaces, and a skylight-capped bathroom that opens to a back patio. Another living area and two bedrooms can be found upstairs.

The second-floor office is ideal for getting work done. The custom wine cellar in the basement, meanwhile, makes pouring up a glass of Merlot a breeze after hours. Aside from the detached casita, which houses a living room, kitchen, and ensuite bedroom with two closets, the grounds provide access to two garages and a clay tennis court for spontaneous matches alongside lush landscaping.
