Facebook Marketplace is increasingly becoming a platform that people use to fill their homes with furniture with character (that also typically comes at a lower price than retail stores). While users should be aware of scams, you can get some pretty great deals. One thrifter who recently purchased a coffee table from a stranger got an extraordinary deal: his purchase of $120 was actually worth more than he paid for—a lot more. We’re bringing you that story; more in today’s news digest: the best colors to paint a house and get a lot more money, a hurricane forecast tool goes offline, and the potential first hurricane of the season.
One Man’s Trash, Another Man’s Treasure
When Tyler Wallis found a glass, flower-shaped coffee table on Facebook Marketplace, he almost hesitated to buy it: it was $20 over his $100 budget, and the seller was located 45 minutes away. But after some thought and getting six different opinions, he decided to buy it. He’s glad he did, and for more than one reason. He researched the item and, much to his surprise, it was a coffee table made by Italian furniture company Cattelan Italia circa the 1990s. Where it appears, it’s listed on auction sites for between a whopping $2,250 and $8,250. Not only does it add character and charm to his space, but it’s a valuable addition to his collection of thrifted items. Tyler spoke to Newsweek about the experience. Read more about it here.
Risky Hurricane Season Decision; Storm Watch for July 4th; The Paint Color Home Sellers Should Consider
The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) announced that it will stop providing data from satellites—satellites that have been instrumental in helping forecasters predict hurricane formation, intensity, direction, and landfall for decades. Without the satellites, meteorologists and hurricane researchers will face critical delays in forecasting. With weather events intensifying more and more rapidly, this risks leading to disastrous consequences for people and communities who live in the path of a storm.
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance in the southern Gulf that has a slight chance of becoming a named storm. Currently, it’s not predicted to make landfall in the United States, but it may bring above-average rainfall to the Texas coast.
