The right outdoor fan turns a deck, patio, or yard into a relaxing space on the hottest of days.  While most of these fans aren’t meant to be left outside during harsh weather, many models feature water- or UV-resistant materials and GFCI plugs for safer outdoor use. They may also offer multiple speeds, misting action, or portability to help beat the summer heat. To see which of today’s popular models provide the best cooling power and value, we put 10 to the test.

Our top pick is the Lasko Misto, thanks to its three powerful fan speeds and misting action that instantly cools us down. We also appreciate that it’s durable, portable, and easy to use—just plug it in and connect a water hose.

For outdoor activities or patio lounging on scorching hot days, the Lasko Misto makes a real difference in comfort levels, reducing air temperature by up to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. This small fan hooks directly to a garden hose to emit a fine mist for quick cooling. It features three fan speeds, pivoting action, and internal oscillation. It’s also weather-, rust-, and UV-resistant, and features a GFCI plug for safe outdoor operation.

We appreciated that this fan came completely assembled. All we had to do was connect a water hose, plug it in, and power it on. We used it on one of the first truly hot days of the summer, when temperatures hovered near 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The mist was cool and refreshing, instantly making us more comfortable. The pivoting action was especially useful, allowing us to direct the airflow and mist precisely where we needed it most.

While this outdoor misting fan was a top performer in cooling power, there are a couple of drawbacks to consider. First, if you’re within a few feet of the fan, expect to get slightly wet. The fan emits a wide mist, leaving fine water droplets in its path. Secondly, you need access to a water hose or spigot for the misting action, which isn’t always available, especially when attending outdoor events such as ball games or camping trips.

What our tester says: “The Lasko Misto is a saving grace during hot weather. Its mist instantly cools and it conveniently hooks to a standard water hose. I plan to have this fan running all summer to make hanging out on my patio more tolerable in the heat.”—Katie Barton, Product Reviews tester and writer

Small personal fans are a lifesaver for hot outdoor events, such as baseball games and cookouts, and the OnlyNew portable fan is no exception. It offers four wind speeds, along with some cool features for outdoor activities, including an LED light, a USB-A port for phone charging, and a built-in hook for hanging the fan if desired. Best of all, a fully charged battery can power this rechargeable fan for up to 30 hours.

Small portable fans are subject to a lot of use, abuse, and accidental drops. Because of this, one of the first tests we conducted was a drop test. We turned the fan on and knocked it off our outdoor table onto the concrete patio three times. It came out unscathed. Nothing broke off, and surprisingly, the fan continued to run even after hitting the hard ground.

At close range (within 3 to 4 feet), we could feel the fan’s airflow, and it cooled us down. But due to its compact size, it didn’t make much of a difference if we were farther away. We would recommend this fan for camping trips and outdoor events. However, it’s important to note that the manufacturer doesn’t specify whether this is weather-resistant or a waterproof outdoor fan, so we don’t recommend leaving it out during harsh weather.

An outdoor wall-mount fan saves valuable floor space while still allowing air to be directed accurately. NewAir’s 18-inch model is built for durability with steel blades, a powder-coated safety cage, and a ball-bearing motor for smooth running. Three speed settings allow the user to adjust the fan up to 4,000 CFM. This high-velocity fan is rated IPX4 and comes with a GFCI plug that automatically cuts power in the event of a short circuit.

This fan came fully assembled and included a drywall anchor and a large bolt for mounting. The 10-foot power cord gave us flexibility during installation. We tested all three speeds and were impressed. Even at the lowest fan speed, we could feel the airflow from about 6 feet away. At its highest speed, it was one of the most powerful fans we tested, although we did note that the fan was somewhat noisy on its highest setting.

We also found this industrial outdoor fan well-priced compared to similar options we’ve tested in the past. Its pivoting action allows users to direct airflow right where needed, making it a great addition to a garage, workshop, or covered outdoor space.

The Rowenta Extreme pedestal fan can be used indoors or outdoors. It features a water-resistant design and a GFCI plug, although it’s not intended to be left out during harsh weather. Its many settings include three fan speeds (low, medium, and high), three modes (natural, sleep, and outdoor), 90-degree oscillation, and a pivotable head for directing airflow. It also features a built-in timer function that can automatically shut the fan off after 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours.

The Rowenta outdoor patio fan came in several pieces, and we felt the instructions could be a bit clearer. While assembling the base was pretty self-explanatory, it took us a few attempts to attach the fan blades and grille cover. Once assembled, the wheeled base made it easy for us to maneuver the fan around our back patio.

While this wasn’t the highest-powered portable outdoor fan, it still provided a nice airflow that kept us comfortable on a hot, sweaty day and was a favorite for use on the deck or patio. One of its most impressive features was its quiet operation. It was barely audible even on the highest setting. The Rowenta also came equipped with a remote control for easy powering.

    Assembly 5/5 Air Circulation 3.5/5 Noise 4/5 Design 4.2/5 Value 4.2/5

The tall and slender Lasko oscillating tower fan is a versatile choice that can be used both indoors and outdoors. A built-in carry handle makes it relatively easy to move from place to place. Four speeds provide a maximum of 276 CFM, and internal oscillation helps spread air over a wider area than is apparent at first glance.

The assembly of this outdoor oscillating fan was a breeze. All we had to do was remove the packaging and snap the base into place. The airflow was adequate for warm days, but might not deliver enough power to stay cool during the peak of summer. The fan’s controls are simple and include three buttons: power, fan speed, and oscillation.

Lasko says its tower fan is weather-resistant and “engineered and designed to withstand the outdoors.” It is also fitted with a GFCI for safety. However, we would still bring it indoors during bad weather. And while the price is competitive, it doesn’t have a remote control. Overall, this outdoor floor fan would be best suited for covered outdoor spaces, such as sunrooms, screened porches, or patios.

Ego is developing an impressive reputation with its high-performance cordless devices, and the Power+ misting fan is another example. There are two misting settings, and a built-in pump allows water to be supplied from any convenient bucket. It features five speeds, with a maximum airflow of 5,000 CFM, and can run for up to 60 hours, depending on the chosen battery. A telescopic handle and durable wheels make for easy portability.

Although the construction is described as weather-resistant, no specifics are given. It wouldn’t be recommended to leave it out in the rain. Additionally, those who don’t already own Ego equipment will need to buy a battery and charger, thus making a considerable investment even more pricey.

During testing, we found that the Ego fan delivered powerful airflow and effective misting action that would keep just about anyone cool on the hottest of summer days. Since it’s battery-powered and can pump water out of a bucket, it’s perfect for camping trips, summer barbeques, or even long outdoor sporting events. Our biggest criticism is the fan’s noise level. On high, the fan was too loud to talk over, and even on low, we could still hear the water pump working in the background. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re sensitive to noise, this may not be the fan for you.

Those looking for versatility can’t go wrong with the Shark FlexBreeze with InstaCool misting. This pedestal fan is suitable for use both indoors and outdoors, thanks to its UV- and water-resistant design. It can transform from a pedestal to a tabletop fan and can be used corded or cordless. It comes with a remote but also has controls on top of the fan head. Best of all, the InstalCool misting attachment can connect to a garden hose, delivering misting action that can make air temperatures feel up to 10 degrees cooler.

Assembling the fan was no sweat off our backs and took us less than a couple of minutes. We first tested the fan indoors and noted that it emitted a nice breeze, and the oscillation helped make the room feel more comfortable. We then detached the portable fan from the pedestal and took it outside to test the misting functions. The InstaCool misting attachment hooked directly to our garden hose, and when we turned it on, we felt a fine mist of water that cooled us down.

We appreciated this fan’s quiet operation. On its lowest setting, it was barely audible. At its highest setting, the noise it produced was about the equivalent of a conversation, which we found soothing rather than disruptive.

Those who have a large outdoor space to cool will want to take a close look at the Minka-Aire Xtreme 65-inch ceiling fan. The sleek, contemporary design offers eight blades that move air at up to 9,036 CFM while keeping noise levels to a minimum. A six-speed handheld remote provides easy control.

While installation is no more difficult than for any other ceiling fan, the size makes it advisable to have assistance. It took us a little over an hour to assemble and install. The fan came with a wall-mount control and a remote control. Once it was up, we felt the breeze throughout our porch area, and the remote was able to power the fan even from inside the house.

Numerous customizations are available for this fan (each sold separately), including an LED lighting kit, downrods, and a smart-home controller.

What our tester says: Mark Wolfe, Bob Vila writer and product tester, notes in The Best Outdoor Ceiling Fans that “The fan motor worked smoothly and quietly. Air movement felt diffused rather than intense, but it was abundant throughout our porch area.”

    Our Ratings

    Assembly 4/5 Air Circulation 4.5/5 Noise 5/5 Design 5/5 Value 4.5/5

The Honeywell Belmar ceiling fan is a great option for illuminating and cooling outdoor common areas. This fan features five blades and offers three adjustable fan speeds, controlled by a pull chain. Its damp-rated housing and wet-rated blades make it a top pick for covered spaces, and it can be used as an outdoor gazebo fan or on porches or workshops.

We wired this fan to a single light switch to control the power, and then used the pull chains to adjust the fan speed. We tested all speeds, including the forward and reverse functions, and appreciated how well the fan moved air and how quietly it operated.

When the sun went down, the fan’s light provided enough illumination for us to read. We liked the light’s frosted glass shade and the durable, plastic fan blades. The transitional look can complement many outdoor design styles, and the fan is available in both bronze and white finishes.

Adding an outdoor ceiling fan to your porch or covered patio needn’t cost a small fortune. The Prominence Home fan offers an attractive design and ample airflow at a budget-friendly price. It boasts four fan blades, three speed settings, and pull-chain operation. The blades reverse, allowing control over the ceiling fan direction during varying seasons. It’s available in matte black or white, giving options to coordinate with any decor style.

The Prominence ceiling fan is damp-rated, meaning it’s suitable for covered outdoor spaces or even to be used inside, but shouldn’t be installed in open outdoor areas. The assembly was easy and took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes for full installation. We found the frosted glass light to offer plenty of brightness for entertaining or even reading past dark.

This outdoor ceiling fan with light moved plenty of air to keep us cool on hot, humid days. Our biggest concern was with the composite fan blades. We prefer plastic blades on outdoor fans as they’re less likely to warp or sag. Still, we noticed no issues within our testing timeframe.

How We Tested the Best Outdoor Fans

    Products tested  10
    Time spent testing  30 days
    Tests performed 7
    Price range $30 to $400

There are outdoor fans to suit all kinds of spaces, and we wanted to ensure that diversity was well represented in our top picks. We reviewed models from over 20 manufacturers and explored both fixed and portable alternatives. We also considered each fan’s ability to withstand various weather conditions. As Dave Bringer, the CEO of Bringer Appliance Repair, located in Louisville, Kentucky, points out, “The first thing to look for in an outdoor cooling fan is its environmental durability. Wet-rated options can handle harsh conditions, such as rain, snow, and heavy winds.”

From there, we chose 10 models to test. We assembled the fans, taking note of any issues that arose. Then, we waited for an 80-degree-Fahrenheit day so we could test the fans side by side. We tried all the fans’ settings and any included features or accessories. To test portability, we carried each portable model up and down a flight of stairs. We used the fans on and off for over a month, as weather conditions allowed, and at the end of testing, we cleaned each fan according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

All of our findings were recorded in a rubric survey where we awarded each model a score from 1 to 5 based on assembly, air circulation, noise, design, and value. At the end of testing, scores were added, and fans were given awards based on the areas in which they excelled.

What to Consider When Choosing an Outdoor Fan

    OnlyNew Portable Fan Powered On
Photo: Katie Barton for Bob Vila

Outdoor fan design can be remarkably diverse, as can performance levels. Options encompass misting system fans, portable fans, outdoor ceiling fans, handheld models, and more. When searching for the best outdoor fan for your exterior living space, you’ll want to spend time considering the following key elements.

    Blades

Blades have an impact on efficiency, noise levels, and decorative appearance, and this is particularly the case with outdoor ceiling fans. They do not directly affect the volume of airflow (given in cubic feet per minute, or CFM), which is more dependent on blade speed.

Most outdoor fans have between three and five blades, but it’s possible others may have more. The number and pitch (angle) will affect how noisy the fan is, though decibel ratings aren’t often provided. Generally speaking, the more blades a fan has, the quieter it is. However, it takes more energy to move those blades through the air, so the fan may consume more power.

    Size and Weight

Size and weight are important in several ways. Small portable fans can be used for individual cooling, whereas large ceiling fans spread refreshing air over a wide area. Larger fans usually generate higher CFM than small outdoor ceiling fans, though speed also matters.

If the outdoor floor fan is to be moved around regularly, then obviously, weight makes a difference. However, it’s important to note that many portable outdoor cooling fans have wheels. Weight is also important when fitting wall- or ceiling-mounted fans. It’s vital that the supporting structure is strong enough. Outdoor ceiling fans that plug in can be convenient, though many are hardwired.

    Wet/Damp Rating

Some outdoor fans are designed to remain outdoors in all weather, but many are not. John Jordan, president of Integrity Heating & Cooling, located in Chicago, Illinois, says, “When it comes to safety, ensure the fan you choose has a wet or damp rating, which means it is weather-resistant to withstand moisture and outdoor conditions. [To prevent accidents], fans with safety guards are advisable in case you have children or pets. Freestanding fans should have a sturdy base and be weighted to prevent tipping.”

Wet-rated outdoor fans offer greater protection against rust and should also prevent moisture from entering the motor or electrical connections. Damp-rated outdoor fans for patios and other outdoor spaces need to be protected from direct contact with wet weather, and work well in covered spaces or as garage fans.

No specific regulations define wet or damp ratings, but some outdoor fans meet the internationally recognized Ingress Protection (IP or IPX ratings) that provide specific details. For an additional level of safety, some have a GFCI plug or inline switch that will cut power in the event of a short circuit.

    Control Mechanism

Outdoor fan control mechanisms vary considerably, and again, these depend on the type of fan. Portable models and outdoor misting fans tend to have onboard controls, but they may also come with handheld remotes. Low-cost wall- and ceiling-mounted outdoor fans may have simple pull chains or cords, but more advanced models have remotes.

The most recent development is smart outdoor fans that can be controlled with a phone, tablet, or potentially with voice commands if the fan can be linked to a smart-home system such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Smart ceiling fans also fall into this category, allowing for control via a smart device.

Calculations varied depending on the specs we consulted. However, a common recommendation is three to four times the area (in cubic feet), so for a 10-by-10-foot space with an 8-foot ceiling (800 cubic feet), the recommendation would be between 2,400 CFM and 3,200 CFM.

    Q. What color outdoor fan is best?

The best outdoor fan color is very much a question of personal taste, though white, nickel, and bronze are popular. If the fan is to be fixed, consider the location and perhaps choose something that will blend in with the background.

    Q. Where is it best to mount an outdoor ceiling fan?

Outdoor ceiling fans can make a space feel cooler and help deter bugs. Install ceiling fans rated for outdoor use in covered spaces such as garages, porches, patios, or workshops.

    Q. What is the best material for outdoor fan blades?

The best materials for outdoor fan blades include durable, UV-resistant plastics and metals resistant to rust or corrosion, such as aluminum or stainless steel.

    Meet the Testers

Katie Barton is a writer and product tester with 10 years of experience in the field. She spends much of her summer camping, where powerful outdoor fans are a must.

Glenda Taylor is a product tester, writer, and co-owner of a general contracting company. She tests a wide range of power tools as well as other home improvement, household, and lawn-and-garden products.

Mark Wolfe is a writer and an avid DIYer who lives in a 50-year-old home. When he isn’t writing, he spends his time upgrading, repairing, and replacing anything and everything in his home, yard, and garden.
