Driving the 2025 Lexus LX 700h

Lexus is the luxury division of Toyota, a company known for its hybrids. The Lexus LX is the crown jewel of the Lexus lineup, a full-size SUV with nearly every feature automotive engineers have ever thought to create.

Yet, until now, there has been no hybrid-powered Lexus LX.

No more. For the 2025 model year, Lexus has finally done the obvious thing: It has built a hybrid version of the LX. I spent a week in the 2025 Lexus LX 700h Luxury. A month wouldn’t be enough time to master all of its features. But a week was enough time to conclude that the LX is an outstanding luxury SUV, but going hybrid isn’t necessary to get the most out of it.

    Which Trim Level?

My tester was the LX 700h Luxury.

If you’re buying the V6-equipped LX 600, Luxury is the top of the three trim levels. However, the hybrid-powered LX 700h is the base model. The “base model” of a luxury automaker’s flagship is basic, like the slowest finalist in an Olympic sprint is slow. It’s still exceptionally well-equipped, but spending more and getting even more is possible.

My tester was technically a pre-production model, but Lexus says it would carry a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $121,145 plus a $1,450 delivery fee.

    Favorite Feature

The LX has so many features that it should come with a co-pilot to help operate them all. I didn’t get around to testing them all in a week.

Some even felt silly. The LX has a G-force meter as if you’re going to take your 3-row luxury SUV to the track.

However, the standout feature remains the exceptional 25-speaker Mark Levinson Reference Surround Sound feature. It finds the subtleties in music you’ve heard many times before. I don’t mean that it’s loud, though it can be. I mean that, at normal volumes, it has a depth few can match. Refreshingly, it’s the same on every trim level. You don’t have to pay extra to get the best sound.

    What It’s Like to Drive

The LX 700h uses a 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 mated to an electric motor for a total output of 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, and is full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD). That’s a lot of power, but it’s more smooth than quick.

Like most luxury SUVs, it has an adjustable air suspension. In some rivals, there’s little difference between one and another. Here, the differences are sharp. Comfort is entirely too soft for me in mostly urban driving (though perhaps perfect on rougher roads). Sport+ almost eliminates body roll. The Sport setting in between was just right, but I prefer a slightly stiffer ride.

Lexus is known more for smoothness than crispness, so I was prepared for parking this big SUV to be a chore. It isn’t. The steering is tuned so that the car never feels as big as it is.

    Interior Comfort and Technology

You face three screens from the driver’s seat of the LX — the driver’s instrument screen in front of you, a high-mounted central touchscreen that handles infotainment functions, and a low-mounted central touchscreen that controls climate and chassis settings.

It’s a lot of information, but it never feels too much work. You can safely ignore some advanced features until you feel like mastering them.

Once you do decide to take them on, they’re fascinating. Climate Concierge, for instance, measures the temperature of various surfaces within the car and adjusts seat heating and cooling and air temperature to try to keep everyone comfortable.

The third row seats are more adjustable than most; they even recline, but they are a tight fit for small adults. I’m 5-foot-6 and found them too tight.

    Limitations

This car has everything — everything but cargo space.

The cargo area behind the third row is a tight fit for luggage much larger than a backpack. A cargo shelf helps make more of the space usable. But if you plan to carry three full rows and luggage for everyone, you may need to look at competitors like the Cadillac Escalade.

    Key Considerations

The LX 700h gets 20 mpg in combined driving (19 in the city and 22 on the highway). The conventionally powered LX 600 gets 19 mpg in combined driving, 17 in the city, and the same 22 on the highway. It has nearly as much power, at 409 hp.

If you want to own a hybrid, the roughly $4,000 premium for the 700h is worth it. If you’re buying one to save on gas, the EPA estimates you’ll save just $150 over the course of a year.
