    The interviews feature a Proust-style twist, allowing readers to get to know industry leaders on a personal level. This edition features Alison Bringé, chief marketing officer for global brand performance software company Launchmetrics.

    In this Q&A, Ms. Bringé discusses starting small, staying one step ahead of the competition and a favorite media-mogul icon.

    Here is the dialogue:

    What was your first job ever? What did it teach you?
    I started out as a PR coordinator for an Italian accessories brand called Zoppini. It was an exciting role – I got to travel to different award shows and VIP events, managing press and talent relationships, and it all felt very exciting at the time.

    But the team was quite young and it meant that I didn’t really have a mentor to guide my decisions. 

    Looking back, I realize how important those early building blocks are. These days, there’s often a rush to jump into big roles and high-stakes decisions, but starting small and learning the fundamentals is actually what sets you up for long-term success. That’s something I wish I’d had more of at the beginning.

    Which skills have been critical to your success? Did you gain these skills within or outside of the workplace?
    In today’s fast-paced and crowded landscape, the ability to multitask is absolutely key. There’s always too much to do and never quite enough time to do it – so being able to juggle multiple tasks, think on my feet and plan strategically has been a huge part of my success. 

    It’s a skill I’ve developed both inside and outside the workplace – through experience, pressure and a fair bit of trial and error. 

    What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
    When I worked at Net-a-Porter, we were doing really well but there was a lot of external competition. A piece of advice I received then has always stayed with me: Don’t focus on what your competitors are doing now; focus on what they’re going to do next. 

    If you’re constantly reacting to what others are doing in the moment, you’ll always be one step behind. Staying ahead means actually thinking forward.

    How has your field changed since you started out in luxury, and what do you think your industry will look like in a decade?
    Luxury has changed dramatically since I started out. Back then, it was mostly about the physical item you were buying.

    Today, it’s just as much about the experience and how a brand makes you feel. Consumers are now spending as much, if not more, on experiences than on traditional luxury goods.

    Especially in such turbulent times, people are seeking out ways to alleviate stress and find joy, and luxury is responding to that shift. It’s becoming more emotional, more immersive and more personal. 

    Looking ahead, I think luxury will become even more experiential. That’s why brands are investing so heavily in creating meaningful experiences around their products. It’s no longer just about what you buy, but how it makes you feel from the very start. 

    What recent projects have ignited your passion for working in luxury?
    I’m lucky in that I still get excited by the work I do every day. At Launchmetrics, we work with such a wide range of brands – from emerging designers to established names – and helping them solve real challenges and evolve in a fast-changing landscape is very energizing.

    Luxury has shifted dramatically over the past decade, and many brands are still finding their way through those changes – whether it’s navigating the digital space or adapting to shifting consumer expectations – and we’re in a unique position to spot those shifts early and help brands respond with confidence.

    That sense of impact, of helping shape what comes next, is what keeps me passionate about my work.

    Who, in any industry or sphere, would you most like to share a long lunch with and where would you take them?
    Katharine Graham. She was the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company [The Washington Post] and she stepped into that role during a time when women simply weren’t expected, or supported, to lead at that level.

    What I find so compelling is that she didn’t start off feeling ready – which is something many of us experience in our own careers. She grew into the job, often under intense public pressure, and made some of the most consequential decisions in modern media history.

    I’d want to talk to her about what it means to take on responsibility before you feel fully confident and how she handled the weight of making decisions that affected not just her company, but the entire country.

    We’d probably meet somewhere quiet and understated, maybe a small hotel restaurant in D.C. I don’t imagine she’d want fanfare and I’d just want the space to really listen.

    How do you get into the right mindset before a big meeting or presentation?
    For me, it’s all about clarity and intention. I take a moment to think about why this meeting matters, what the goal is, who’s in the room and how I want people to feel when they leave. Whether it’s a board presentation or an internal strategy session, I want my energy to be focused and present. 

    Sometimes I’ll review a few brand campaigns or recent data points that inspire me as a sort of creative grounding. And if it’s a really big one, a cup of coffee and a good playlist usually help set the tone.

    On your days off, what can you be found doing to relax or have some fun?
    Spending time with my family. My kids are still young and, while I absolutely love my job, I also know these early years fly by.

    So, on my days off, it’s less about switching off completely and more about being fully present with them, whether it’s a walk, a messy art project or just a slow breakfast together. I want to make sure I soak in every moment while I can. 

    What does luxury mean to you?
    For me, luxury is about time: time to think, time to be with the people you love or time to take care of yourself without rushing. It’s less about material things and more about creating space in your life for what actually matters. 

    Whether a product or service/experience, what is your favorite luxury indulgence?
    A really good spa day. Quiet, no screens, no schedule, just time to reset and feel human again. It’s a rare indulgence, but when I make the time, it makes all the difference.
