Tesla Chargers Open to Honda, Acura Owners

Owners of the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX can now plug their cars into Tesla Superchargers. They’ll need an adapter to use them. Honda has developed an approved adapter, now on sale at dealerships and Honda’s online DreamShop for $225.

Round Plugs and Square Holes

Not every electric vehicle (EV) can plug into every charger. Until 2023, each EV builder used one of three different plug shapes.

Most EV drivers do most of their charging at home, so that wasn’t a day-to-day problem for many drivers. But EV drivers on a long road trip were left hunting for not just any open charger, but one that could fit their car.

Tesla’s immense Supercharger network remains America’s most extensive. It was long open only to Tesla owners. Its plug shape, called the North American Charging System (NACS), was the easiest to use – small enough to operate with one hand.

In late 2023, Ford and Tesla came to an agreement that would let Ford build the NACS port into its cars. One by one, competitors followed suit, Honda and Acura included.

For now, every ZDX and Prologue still comes with the old-style Combined Charging System (CCS) port, necessitating the adapter. However, the company says it plans to build the NACS port directly into its EVs “in the near future.” Future buyers won’t need an adapter.
