Jane Birkin’s Original Hermès Bag Sells for Over $10 Million in Historic Auction

A defining piece of fashion history just broke records. The original Hermès Birkin bag, crafted in 1984 for actress and icon Jane Birkin, sold at Sotheby’s Paris for $10.1 million, becoming the most expensive handbag ever auctioned.

This one-of-a-kind bag was born from a sketch Birkin made mid-flight, leading Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas to design the first-ever Birkin just for her. Unlike later models, this prototype featured custom details including engraved initials, brass hardware, a rare shoulder strap, and even a nail clipper attached, marking it as a true original.

Over time, the Birkin bag has become more than just a purse. It represents luxury, skill, and lasting style. This original bag demonstrates that perfectly, reflecting the actress’s style and the expert work Hermès is famous for. Both collectors and fashion fans see it as a rare piece that connects fashion with history.

The bag shows signs of being well-used by Birkin herself, making it even more special. Previously displayed at the Museum of Modern Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum, it was most recently owned by French collector Catherine Benier.

The winning bidder, Valuence Japan, a luxury company from Tokyo, won the bag after outbidding nine others in a fast-paced auction that surpassed 1 million euros in just 10 minutes.
