Volvo’s given the XC90 a significant refresh for 2025, updating the exterior styling while revamping the interior to bring it more in line with the all-electric EX90 coming to market. It’s a big enough change that Volvo is calling the updated XC90 a 2025.5 model.
With stiff competition from the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, Genesis GV80, Lincoln Aviator, and others, keeping pace with the times is critical. To that end, the XC90 can be had with several variants of its 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder putting out anywhere from 247 to 455 horsepower. All-wheel drive (AWD) remains standard across the board.
However, the biggest changes come with the interior, so let’s see what the Volvo XC90 offers inside.
Passenger Room and Comfort
Space isn’t really an issue in the XC90, as it can be configured to seat six or seven passengers. The second row can be a bench seat with a fold-down armrest or two captain’s chairs. It offers 37 inches of legroom, which is ample, although not class-leading.
The third row in any SUV is a roll of the dice, but with 31.9 inches of leg room, Volvo claims it’s comfortable for anyone 5 feet 7 inches or shorter, which is not too bad. All of the seats provide ergonomic support, which makes the XC90 a good place to be for a long ride or just running around town.
Features and Tech
Since it’s being updated to better align its look with the EX90, it’s safe to say technology is an important part of the cabin. That starts with a 12.3-inch driver information display and an 11.2-inch center screen using Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system.
That infotainment system controls one of three sound systems: the base 220-watt high-performance system, a 14-speaker, 600-watt Harman Kardon premium setup, or the 19-speaker, 1410-watt Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity Audio System available in the top trim levels.
With a wireless charging pad, four USB-C ports in the center console and two in the rear, and wired Apple CarPlay, enjoying the infotainment system isn’t a problem. The XC90 features a standard 4-zone climate system, permitting passengers in the front and second row to set individual temperatures. Additionally, an air quality system filters and monitors incoming air to ensure purity and safety for occupants.
The safety and convenience tech can include a 360-degree parking monitor, a head-up display, cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and collision avoidance.
Materials and Design
Offered in nine trim levels, the XC90 is available in a variety of interior colors and materials, giving it the Scandinavian sophistication the brand is famous for. Depending on the trim level, seats are clad in ventilated Nappa leather, Nordico, a recycled material designed to simulate leather, or cloth seats. Four colors are available.
The panoramic roof opens up the space, allowing plenty of light in, but keeping glare, noise, and heat to a minimum. The power-operated shade can be set to deploy automatically if the temperature hits 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Volvo’s ambient lighting system not only conveys a sense of luxury but also provides plenty of functionality, improving visibility at various places in the cabin in low-light situations.
Lights in the cupholders make it easy to find your drinks in the dark, while rear-seat reading lamps allow those in the back to scour magazines or books without hindering the driver’s ability to see.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
With three rows and two seating plans, the XC90 provides plenty of flexibility when it comes to hauling people or cargo. When both rows of seats are folded flat, there is 85.7 cubic feet of storage capacity. If the third row is down, there is 34.6 cubic feet, and that drops to just 10.6 cubic feet of space for cargo with all three rows ready for passengers. It is not cavernous, but it is not out of line for the segment.
The third-row seats split 50/50, while the second-row seats are 60/40 or 50/50, depending on whether you have a 7-passenger or 6-passenger configuration. Either setup allows for hauling longer items while still bringing an additional passenger.
