A Hollywood Producer’s Longtime L.A. Home Is Up for Grabs at $7 Million

A little over four decades ago, Bruce Gilbert acquired a log cabin-style home in the picturesque enclave of Santa Monica Canyon. There, amid what he calls “one of the most unique neighborhoods in Los Angeles,” the veteran film producer particularly relished entertaining and cooking for friends in his favorite part of the house—a spacious kitchen flaunting a 16-foot eat-in island, commercial-grade appliances, a wall of glass overlooking the pool, and a striking two-way river rock fireplace that connects on the other side to a bar-equipped family room.

Other favorite memories include having legendary actress Meryl Streep as a next-door neighbor for a while, plus the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center right across the street. Not only has the meadow-laced park provided access to a wealth of leisure and fitness pursuits through the years, but it also has a storied history dating back to the prohibition era when A-listers the likes of Clark Gable and Walt Disney used to gather and sip bootleg booze as part of the exclusive, invitation-only Uplifters Club.

The Oscar-nominated producer—most known for his work with actress Jane Fonda on the 1970s and 1980s movies Coming Home, The China Syndrome, 9 to 5, and On Golden Pond—has now decided it’s time to part ways with the residence after a lengthy 42-year tenure. He picked it up in 1983 from the late Elektra Records chairman Bob Krasnow, who had paid just $650,000 for the place in 1972.

The asking price is a smidge under $7 million, with Rochelle Atlas Maize of Nourmand & Associates holding the listing.

Built in the early 1920s but obviously remodeled and modernized through the years, the wood-sided structure rests on a walled and gated parcel spanning almost half an acre. Inside, four bedrooms and three bathrooms are spread across roughly 2,600 square feet of single-level living space boasting dark hardwood floors and high ceilings dotted with skylights.

Other standout features include the aforementioned culinary center, which is additionally outfitted with a six-burner stove, a griddle, double ovens, and a lava rock gas grill. There’s also a cozy reading room sporting bookshelves and a daybed, as well as a secluded primary suite that spills out to a grassy and tree-laced backyard spotlighted by a large rectangular pool encased within a sprawling brick terrace.
