Mulching in the fall benefits most plants in your garden, but it is especially critical for some plants more than others. Mulching insulates the soil, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients to the soil, among a host of other benefits.

We spoke with the Smithsonian Institution’s Lead Horticulturist, Alex Dencker, to learn which plants to mulch in fall and why it’s so important.
