The Grand Egyptian Museum, also known as GEM, is finally opening its doors after years of anticipation. This $1 billion cultural landmark sits just outside Cairo, offering a breathtaking gateway to Egypt’s ancient world. Locals and travelers alike are calling it the most important museum opening of the century.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a project led by Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, with support from international partners like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Construction began in 2002 and involved architects from the Irish firm Heneghan Peng, who won the design competition. Over the years, thousands of archaeologists, conservators, and workers have contributed to bringing it to life.

Just two kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza, the museum feels both modern and deeply connected to Egypt’s past. Inside, a massive statue of Ramses II stands tall under streams of sunlight.

Every corner seems designed to make you stop, look, and take in the wonder around you, from colossal statues that once guarded ancient temples to delicate jewelry crafted for pharaohs thousands of years ago.

The GEM houses over 100,000 artifacts spanning 5,000 years of history. More than 20,000 pieces will be displayed for the first time, including treasures never before seen by the public. The crown jewel is the complete Tutankhamun collection, reunited in full for the first time since its discovery.

The museum isn’t just about its artifacts. It also has high-tech conservation labs, fun learning areas for kids, and peaceful gardens to explore. It feels alive, a place where history meets today’s world.
