It’s nice of you to volunteer to help today. Do you live on campus?
    Natalie:
We commute from home. I think it’s a good balance. We’re like ten minutes away by car, so it feels like I’m dorming at this point, and I don’t have to share a bathroom. It’s lovely.

    Do you take classes together?
Nicole: Yes. Everyone thinks we do it because we’re twins, but we’re both computer-science majors. And if there’s a teacher who has amazing ratings, why would I want to take a class from a teacher with bad ratings? Who’s going to jeopardize themselves like that? And also our mom drives us to school, so we’re not going to Fordham multiple times a day to take one class early in the morning and one in the afternoon.

    So is everyone using ChatGPT?

When it was first introduced, a lot of people used it to write entire papers and essays, but I don’t think that’s what they do anymore. They use it to organize their notes and thoughts rather than writing whole responses to things. I personally don’t use it. I made a decision a pretty long time ago not to.

    What’s your roommate situation?

I have the same roommate as last year, and we made our dorm look like a cute little New York City apartment. We both love the color blue, so we have a lot of blues, whites, and grays going on. I have a photo of this beautiful beach scene, and she has a poster of Vogue magazine, and all the colors tie the room together.

How do you feel about senior year?

Our literal group-chat name with our coaches and seniors is “Seniors in denial” because I’m not ready to say I’m a senior. Maybe it’ll hit me eventually in another couple months, but I’m just sort of like, Oh, I’m just here for a fourth year. I’m not a senior yet.

Was it an emotional day for your parents?

I’m the last child, so they’re fully empty nesters now. I was nervous they were going to be a wreck, but they held it together. I’m from North Carolina, so everybody was so shocked that I came up here. My oldest brother went to the University of South Carolina, and my other brother is a senior at Auburn. So it’s very different.

    Do you live on campus?

I’m actually staying with my grandparents in Throggs Neck and commuting, but the whole process has been kind of a shift. I’m taking my mom’s room, and my grandparents left everything as it was when she was a little kid. There’s a bunch of girlie stuff on the walls; the furniture and paint are all pink.

    Senior, Medfield, Massachusetts

Do you have graduation plans yet?

I’m going to work in auditing. I already have a job in Boston, so I’ll be there for a year while I get my C.P.A., then I’ll transfer back to New York. I love that accounting is like solving puzzles; you take pieces here and there of financial information and you analyze them to make sense of the larger overall picture.
