NBA commissioner sells UWS co-op in $8.5M slam dunk

NBA commissioner sells UWS co-op in .5M slam dunk

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has had his hands full this offseason: an investigation into tampering claims made against the Los Angeles Clippers and their star forward Kawhi Leonard, multiple star players recovering from devastating injuries heading into the season and, apparently, shopping his Upper West Side apartment.

At least he can check the apartment off his list.

Silver sold his three-bedroom spread at The Beresford, a co-op building at 211 Central Park West, for $8.5 million in an off-market deal, according to public records.

The buyer, Louise Riggio, is the widow of Barnes & Noble founder Leonard Riggio, who passed away last year. She told the New York Times in February she was looking to downsize both her Park Avenue apartment and her art collection, which she sold for over $270 million in an auction held by Christie’s earlier this year.

Silver paid $6.8 million for the unit in 2012 before transferring it into a trust in 2017, according to public records. (Evidence of Silver’s purchase may be hard to find because Jared Kushner ordered the original scoop from the New York Observer taken down while he was running the outlet in 2012.)

It’s not clear where Silver is off to next, but the NBA headquarters will be staying put for at least another 10 years — the organization extended its lease at 645 Madison Avenue, also known as Olympia Tower, through 2035 back in 2016.

Designed by Emery Roth in 1929, the 20-story co-op has housed a number of well-known names over the years. Actor Jerry Seinfeld, actress Glenn Close, singer Diana Ross and Fox News host turned Trump family insider Kimberly Guilfoyle have all been buyers in the building.

In August, billionaire Bill Ackman sold unit 8F at the building for $9.4 million, down from the $13.5 million he paid for it in 2017. Ackman still has the unit next door, although it’s on the market for $8.25 million.
