If you’re looking for a flame-free way to fragrance your home, a reed diffuser might be just the solution you’re after. Joyce Barnes, chief operating officer of TOCCA, says a reed diffuser can add a subtle scent to your home without a flame or an on/off switch. “You can even layer fragrances by pairing a reed diffuser with your favorite candle to create a unique atmosphere in your home,” she says.

Plus, reed diffusers can also make great decor. “A well chosen vessel can complement a room’s style while infusing it with scent, making them perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, and any space where you want both beauty and ambiance without worry,” says Mei Xu, founder of Blueme wellness fragrances.

However, with all these benefits, there are a few pitfalls—most of which can be attributed to user error. Read on to learn the top five mistakes that can occur when using a reed diffuser, and how to fix them.

    • Joyce Barnes is the chief operating officer of TOCCA, a beauty and home fragrance brand.
    • Mei Xu is the founder of Blueme, home of unique wellness fragrances.

    1. Not Turning the Reeds

Whether you’re installing new reeds or using a new diffuser for the first time, flipping the reed sticks after a few hours can help jump-start the diffusion process, says Xu. After the reeds have fully absorbed the oil, she recommends flipping the reeds at least once a week or every few days to keep the fragrance pumping.

    2. Competing Scents

If you’re using more than one diffuser in your home, Xu says allowing enough breathing room (ideally one to two rooms) between each can prevent competing scents. “Many people prefer a consistent fragrance throughout their home for a cohesive atmosphere, but mixing complementary scents in different rooms can create a more dynamic experience.” Fruity scents or florals with fresh elements make for harmonious pairs, but avoid clashing personalities like heavy spices with crisp, airy scents, she warns.

    3. Not Considering Size

Trying to compensate for the wrong-size reed diffuser by adding or removing reeds is the wrong way to go, says Xu. “Always use the full set of reeds provided. The number is optimized to balance fragrance diffusion and longevity, usually lasting about two months,” she says.

To properly balance the fragrance, opt for a smaller diffuser in smaller rooms to avoid overpowering the space. Large rooms can take the gusto of a more substantial diffuser.

    4. Poor Placement

Finding the right location for your reed diffuser comes with a few parameters. Always set them in an open space with natural air circulation away from direct sunlight and heating or cooling vents, and set back from high-traffic areas where they could be knocked or jostled.

However, your diffuser is worthy of being noticed, says Barnes. The decor value of a reed diffuser shouldn’t be underestimated, Xu agrees. “With thoughtfully designed vessels—whether minimalist glass or decorative ceramics—they can enhance a room’s aesthetic as much as its atmosphere,” she says.

    5. Not Taking Safety Precautions

As far as safety goes, Barnes advises starting with the basics: a stable spot that’s out of the reach of children and pets. From there, find a solution to protect against accidental oil drips that can harm your furniture. Xu suggests placing your reed diffusers on a tray or coaster to avoid this scenario.

Tips for Maintaining Fragrance Strength and Longevity

    • Never reuse reeds. Barnes says reeds can become clogged with residue over time, so they need to be replaced when you open a new diffuser to ensure proper performance.
    • Always use the provided number of reeds. Rather than adding or removing reeds to balance fragrance impact in the space, adjust its room placement to fit its size or swap it for one that better matches your scent goals.
    • Never place your diffuser in a location that receives direct airflow. Whether from a heating or cooling vent, avoid doing this as it could dry out the diffuser in record time.
    • Ensure the reeds are spread out. Each time you flip the reeds, make sure they are spread out to allow the fragrance to disperse properly.
    • Layer scents with a candle. Barnes suggests pairing your diffuser with a candle to build on the fragrance. This works exceptionally well in large rooms where you want the fragrance to reach every corner.
