Whether you’re filling your own cookie jar with fresh-baked goods, hoping to steal the show at a bake sale, or treating guests to a sweet surprise, there’s nothing better than a homemade cookie (or three). Our readers agree, and they’ve baked hundereds of BHG cookie recipes over the years. But these ten recipes have risen to the top of the pile. From beautifully layered bar cookies to jam-filled shortbreads to classic chocolate chip cookies with a twist, these are BHG’s 10 most-loved cookie recipes.

Cowboy cookies are like the fancy older sister of a classic chocolate chip. The recipe is similar, with a few additions that send these cookies to the top of our list. In addition to chocolate chips, you’ll fold in oats, shredded coconut, and pecans. The result is a more decadent, chewier treat that’s likely to become your new favorite.

This gem from the BHG test kitchen is rich, soft, and packed with bittersweet chocolate chips. The secret that makes these cookies worth a million bucks? It’s brown butter. The nutty, umami-rich flavor elevates every bite. Plus, chilling the dough for at least an hour (the longer, the better) yields what we think is the perfect texture: soft and doughy.

This recipe first appeared in a BHG cookbook published in 1947. We’ve since made it on repeat, and it holds up to the test of time. By using shortening instead of butter, the cookies stay softer and fluffier. Plus, they get extra crunch from toasted walnuts.

This recipe is inspired by the ever-viral Crumbl bakery cookies. They’re supersized, ultra-soft and fluffy, and topped with a luscious almond buttercream frosting. A dash of heavy cream in both the cookie dough and the frosting adds richness and maintains an almost cake-like texture.

These nostalgic cookies are a better version of your favorite grocery store snack. They’re sure to satisfy a sweet tooth, thanks to the fluffy almond frosting (feel free to add some color to your plate). Using egg whites instead of whole eggs keeps the cookies pale, so don’t expect them to brown much in the oven.

    Millionaire Shortbread

In the bar cookie category, millionaire shortbread gets its name for tasting like a million bucks. That’s thanks to the over-the-top combination of buttery shortbread, homemade caramel, and rich chocolate ganache. Don’t be intimidated, though; the caramel comes together in a snap, thanks to canned condensed milk, and the chocolate topping is made with two ingredients: chocolate chips and cream.

These cookies are our take on the famous Levain Bakery treats from New York City. They’re giant, piled high with mix-ins, and are perfectly crisp on the outside with an almost underbaked center. The key is to add a touch of cornstarch to the dough. It prevents the cookies from becoming too chewy or spreading too much in the oven.

These traditional Jewish desserts are made with a simple shortbread dough and filled with your favorite fruit jam. Use a few different flavors of preserves for a beautiful stained-glass effect on your dessert plate. While these are often served during Purim, they’re a welcome sight any time of year.

We couldn’t have a list of our most-loved cookie recipes without good old-fashioned chocolate chip. We slightly tweaked the beloved 1947 recipe by blending shortening with butter for a deeply flavorful cookie that’s still soft and chewy. While the mixed-in nuts are optional, they’re highly recommended.

Almond Butter Fruit and Oat Cookies

This recipe gives you an excuse to eat cookies for breakfast (though we won’t judge if you start your day with any treat on this list). These are sweetened with applesauce and bound together with almond butter (peanut butter also works). Rolled oats, whole wheat flour, and dried fruits and seeds make a hearty cookie that will fuel you until lunchtime.
