Albertsons expands Uber Eats partnership, connecting membership rewards

Grocery chain operator Albertsons is expanding its offerings through the Uber Eats delivery platform.

Already an Uber Eats partner, the new expansion gives “all 48.7 million of Albertsons’ loyalty members” access to perks in the Uber One membership program. That includes both the free “for U” and paid “FreshPass” tiers, even if the Albertsons loyalty members do not have a paid subscription to Uber One, the companies shared.

The announcement makes Albertsons the first major grocer to bring Uber One benefits to all its loyalty tiers, according to Uber. It also expands Uber Eats’ involvement in the grocery delivery space after having added Aldi to its platform in September.

Terry Singla, global vice president of customer strategy and engagement at Albertsons, said in a statement that the retailer’s loyalty program “offers rich benefits and savings.” Those benefits and savings “elevate” consumers’ shopping experiences in-store and online, he explained.

“We are proud to help lead the industry by making Uber One perks available to all loyalty members, not just paid subscribers, because value should be accessible to everyone,” Singla said in the statement.

Albertsons is currently No. 18 in the Top 2000 Database. The database ranks North America’s top online retailers by their annual ecommerce sales and more. Albertsons owns and operates its namesake store, Albertsons, as well as brands including Carrs, Haggen, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Safeway and more.

Albertsons partners with Uber Eats to boost customer experience

Singla also said Albertsons partnering with Uber Eats is “just another meaningful step” the retailer is taking to “earn customers for life.”

The companies have made the Uber One offer available within Albertsons’ loyalty program. Consumers can access that program through the retailer’s app and website.

The companies said consumers can expect:

  • Members of the “for U” free loyalty program can receive a three-month free trial of the paid Uber One membership program.
  • Paid FreshPass annual members can get six months for free.
  • Uber One membership perks include benefits not limited to Uber Eats.
    • Membership will include $0 delivery fees on food and other orders that meet a minimum threshold.
    • Consumers can receive 10% off their orders for eligible Uber Eats deliveries and pickups.
    • Consumers can receive 6% back on eligible Uber rides.

Hashim Amin, head of grocery and retail for North America at Uber, said the partnership makes shopping “easier” and “more rewarding.”

“By bringing Uber One benefits to all of Albertsons Cos. loyalty members, we’re offering even more value and convenience across the experiences customers already love,” Amin said in a statement.

Recent Uber Eats partnerships

In addition to Aldi for groceries, Uber Eats has announced several partnerships with retailers in recent months. Most recently, it announced a partnership with Hibbett for sportswear.

Prior to that, Uber Eats announced partnerships with:

Similarly, Albertsons’ grocery competitor Kroger announced an expansion of its partnership with Instacart and added delivery through DoorDash in October.

Aldi also partners with Instacart, as does Merchants Distributors (MDI), which is a wholesale grocery supplier. Furthermore, Instacart also works with Samsung to replenish refrigerators.
