Alibaba.com and A.P. Moller – Maersk have announced a collaboration that will integrate Maersk’s less than container load (LCL) and full container load (FCL) logistics services into Alibaba.com’s ecommerce platform.

The Alibaba-Maersk integration aims to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with direct access to transparent, cost-effective shipping options.

Less-than-container load enables the use of palletized boxes and crates or small package boxes. Meanwhile, full-container load is an ocean shipment in which the cargo occupies a full container (of any size).

Alibaba owns the world’s two largest online marketplaces by gross merchandise value (GMV), Taobao and Tmall. Taobao ranks No. 1 in the Global Online Marketplaces Database, Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the largest such marketplaces by GMV. Tmall ranks No. 2. Both platforms operate in China and primarily serve the Chinese market. Among Alibaba’s other marketplaces is the global B2B marketplace Alibaba.com.

    Alibaba Maersk integration

The new service enables SMEs to book bulk shipments ranging from 200 kilograms (440.9 pounds) to five tons across eight non-hazardous goods categories. It includes apparel, machinery, home goods, and construction materials. The platform also offers real-time pricing and automated compliance documentation to facilitate cross-border trade.

    Key features include:

    • Competitive rates. Direct access to Maersk’s shipping rates without agency fees.
    • Guaranteed capacity and pricing. The ability to secure space and lock in rates.
    • End-to-end tracking. Real-time shipment monitoring from factory to delivery.
    • Automated compliance. Streamlined documentation processing.

According to Alibaba.com, many of its business buyers are SMEs that often encounter challenges such as unclear pricing and complex logistics. The partnership also aims to address these issues by reducing booking times from days to minutes, ensuring capacity availability, and providing greater supply chain visibility.

Alibaba.com, founded in 1999, is a global B2B ecommerce platform that connects buyers and suppliers in over 200 countries. Its platform facilitates international trade through digital tools that help businesses find suppliers, manage transactions, and streamline operations.

Maersk operates in 130 countries and provides logistics solutions ranging from ocean shipping to integrated supply chain services. The company focuses on simplifying global trade for businesses of all sizes.

The companies expect their integration of Maersk’s logistics services into Alibaba.com’s buyer platform to improve shipping efficiency for SMEs and enhance transparency in cross-border trade.
