Aston Martin Just Unveiled Its Most Powerful SUV Ever

It may have felt like Aston Martin was going against its heritage when it released its first SUV, but with each new iteration, it becomes ever more clear that the DBX is a sports car at heart.

The British marque unveiled on Wednesday a new and even athletic version of its people hauler called the S. The new variant will sit atop the DBX lineup and offer more power than ever before.

In true performance variant fashion, the big story here is the DBX S’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. Aston Martin has used knowledge gained from developing the Valhalla supercar to upgrade the turbochargers. As a result, the powertrain now pumps out 717 hp, which is 20 hp more than before. Thanks to added oomph, the SUV can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 193 mph. Those numbers are identical to those of the other DBX, the 707, so it wouldn’t be a shock if they’re on the conservative side. The latest version of the SUV, like all of its predecessors, makes use of a nine-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels.

At a glance, the DBX S doesn’t look all that different from its stablemate. Both vehicles share the same front fascia and clean lines found on the brand’s sports cars, with the profile and proportions of a modern-day sports SUV. But the new model adds a few key details that set it apart. Up front, the grille is blacked out and there’s a new splitter, there are new sills along the side, and, in the back, the bumper and diffuser have been reworked. There are also new accent colors to choose from—Rosso Corsa Red, Trophy Silver, and Podium Green—and some replacements of the vehicle’s aero elements, like the rear wing, with weight-saving carbon-fiber versions. Rounding things out is a set of 23-inch wheels available in aluminum or, if you feel like spending more money, lighter-weight magnesium.

The interior, like the exterior, doesn’t look radically different from past DBX models. The seats, in both the front and back, feature a new herringbone design that can also be extended to the optional carbon-fiber roof. Alcantara upholstery comes standard and can be found on the seats, dashboard, center console, and headliner. A model-specific “S” logo can also be found on the seats, sill plates, and engine plaque.

Are you in the market for an SUV that can really move? Well, you’re in luck, because Aston Martin is now taking orders for the DBX S. No price has been announced, but it seems likely to cost a decent amount more than the 707, which starts at $256,086.
