Owning a dog is a commitment that goes beyond food, water, walks, and belly rubs. It also includes cleaning up messes and managing odors. It’s simply part of the gig. (And totally worth it!)

Meet my very good boys (pictured): Scooter is a nine-year-old cavapoo (cavalier King Charles spaniel and poodle mix). He has itchy, allergy-affected skin, and sometimes he chews it until it’s raw. You’d never know it under that curly coat though. His sidekick, Rocky, is the zoomiest two-year-old rescue. He’s half French bulldog, about a quarter schnauzer, and descending percentages of poodle and chihuahua. Rocky has a mixed coat that’s befitting his many breeds. Like a lot of dogs, he rolls in whatever foul-smelling thing he can find.

So when I discovered the new Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Pet Care line, I knew I’d have ample opportunities to put them to the test.

My Review of Mrs. Meyers New Pet Products

Full disclosure: I’ve always been a big fan of Mrs. Meyer’s fragrances, and this collection features fresh scents like Coconut Leaf and White Peach. I tried four products that tackle all of the smells that come with being a pet parent: the Pet Stain & Odor Fighter, Dog Deodorizing Spritz, 3-in-1 Dog Shampoo, and Pet Odor Neutralizer.

Coconut Leaf Pet Stain & Odor Fighter

I had no sooner unboxed the products and—right on cue—one of the dogs threw up a chewed-up stick on my white carpet. I removed the solids as well as excess liquid, but alas, a dark spot remained. I grabbed the Coconut Leaf Pet Stain & Odor Fighter and sprayed a generous amount on the spot.

The product is designed to be used on textiles like my carpet, as well as upholstery, bedding, or clothing. The fragrance was pleasant. I let it sit on the carpet then soaked up the excess, and the stain had visibly lightened. I spritzed the spot again and let it sit for about 30 minutes. It lightened it a bit more—but the result was less than satisfactory. While the spray removed any lingering odor, it took a couple of passes with my carpet cleaner to return the carpet to its original brightness.

The Dog Deodorizing Spritz is a no-rinse product designed to be sprayed directly on your furry friend’s coat to knock back icky smells. It’s no replacement for a bath, but it helps if you’re short on time.

I gave both dogs a spritz, especially curious to see how Scooter would react. I’m happy to report that, aside from him being completely put out with me for squirting him, it didn’t appear to cause any discomfort to his sensitive skin. And most importantly, it delivered a quick hit of that great fragrance to his coat. The scent didn’t last more than a few hours, but I found it neutralized the natural musk until bath day.

Which brings me to bath day. The White Peach 3-in-1 Dog Shampoo made the experience of wrangling wet dogs more enjoyable for me. Mine aren’t big fans of the whole sudsy dog spa experience, but the fragrance delivers a nice human benefit: This shampoo has ingredients designed to moisturize the skin while deodorizing smells. The formula is thick, and I used more of it than I thought I’d need. While it doesn’t create a lot of bubbles, it rinsed out of their fur well and the fragrance lasted for about three days, neutralizing any smells.

My favorite of the four products is the Pet Odor Neutralizer, because it simply delivers that wonderful fragrance without having to bathe or clean up after a dog. You can use this spritz as a room and textile freshener. I sprayed it on the places that my dogs like to sleep: the dog bed, my bed, a large ottoman, under the ottoman, and on every piece of furniture. I had friends over after using this product, and they commented that the house smelled great. I must admit, I can be nose-blind to my own pet smells in the house, but this product was a winner. It made a noticeable difference, quickly.
