The long and devastating saga of Joann Fabrics’ bankruptcy is finally coming to a close. After Joann announced its second bankruptcy in January, the news was shortly followed by another statement alerting customers that Joann Fabrics would be shuttering its stores for good across the nation this spring. All stores have officially shut down as of May 31, and as the central supply store for so many crocheters, knitters, and crafters alike, where exactly are former Joann customers turning to?
We’ve rounded up a few options for crafting supply shopping within the U.S.. While it’s hard to see Joann Fabrics shut down for good, crafters still have nationwide options online and in person.
General Craft Supplies
Michaels
Michaels has risen to take the place of Joann Fabrics within the past few months. While it doesn’t always have the same endless selection of yarn and fabrics that Joann offered, Michaels has been expanding its fabric selection and even offers new fabric cutting tables across most of its stores.
This supply shop is a solid place to pick up crafting supplies on the go. You’ll find embroidery thread and floss options, crochet and knitting needles, a yarn aisle (or two) with Michaels’ house brand, and a fabrics section offering a small range of textiles.
The biggest draw when it comes to Michaels is that it has great alternatives to other Joann Fabrics offerings, including faux flowers and greenery, seasonal home decor, painting and framing supplies, and crafting kits for every kind of project.
Etsy
Etsy is a great place to support independent fabric shops. You’ll find hand-dyed yarn, great deals on bulk fabric, and plenty of sewing, quilting, and fiber arts patterns to choose from. The great thing about Etsy is that every purchase usually supports an independent seller or small business.
However, you’ll need to be careful with AI-generated patterns and products; these listings look great on the surface, but can end up sending you a pattern that’s nothing like the pictures.
Local and Independent Craft Shops
Not everyone has the option to shop locally, as crafting supply shops can be few and far between. But independent stores tout knowledgeable staff, a wide selection of fabrics and patterns that crafters love, and many brands, sometimes with locally made patterns or dyed yarns.
Don’t forget to also look out for used craft and art supply stores in your area. Crafters will donate lightly-used paints, crafting supplies, tools, fabrics, and yarns for you to purchase at a steep discount—a sustainable way to craft.

Sewing Supplies and Fabrics
Mood Fabrics
Mood Fabrics is an expansive online fabric store, also offering sewing tools and accessories. Mood Fabrics carries a wide range of fabrics, from budget-friendly picks to high-end couture options. If you happen to be in New York or Miami, you can even visit physical stores to shop around.
Wawak
Wawak claims to be America’s number one sewing supply company, and plenty of its customers can’t help but agree. Wawak is less about fabric and more about all the sewing supplies you could possibly need, which is especially handy since advanced sewing tools are often not as accessible as crafters would like.
Threads, measuring supplies, sewing machine tools, and many accessories (from ironing supplies to belt buckles) are all available online via Wawak. If you’re into embroidery, Wawak is a solid option, too.
Fabric Mart
Fabric Mart is a favorite for its quality fabrics often offered at low prices. You’ll find loads of clearance fabrics available year-round on its website, and Fabric Mart also offers frequent sales. Notions, zippers, and matching thread for every project make Fabric Mart a one-stop shop for starting a new project, and there are practically endless patterns, colors, and textiles to choose from, with new arrivals joining Fabric Mart’s website regularly.

Crocheting, Knitting, and Fiber Arts
Yarnspirations
Yarnspirations is well-known within the fiber arts community for its reasonably priced yarn, frequent sales, and wide range of options. As the owner of the Bernat yarn brand, you’ll also usually find more colors and materials available on Yarnspirations’ website than you would on other major retailers. The brand also owns Caron, Patons, and Lily Sugar ’n Cream, so if you’re a dedicated supporter of any of these brands, Yarnspirations is the place to be.
Hobbii
Hobbii offer low prices on its yarn with a wide range of brands, materials, and even yarn bundles to work with. The company owns Friends Yarn and Happy Place yarns, and Hobbii’s website is known for offering a much larger selection of yarn weights (referring to the thickness of yarn) than many in-person retailers.

You’ll even find extras like stamps, beads, and charms to customize your creations.
Snuggly Monkey
Snuggly Monkey offers all things needlework, from embroidery to quilting. Silk threads, embroidery floss, and Sashiko thread are just a few options you’ll find on Snuggly Monkey’s website. Felting, cross-stitch, embroidery, and crafting patterns can be located here, and you’ll find loads of tools you didn’t know you were missing from your collection.
