The Lexus GX arrived last year with a dynamic new look. While it retained its place as a 7-passenger luxury SUV with a knack for conquering off-road trails, the remake installed a more high-tech interior with fresh, premium features. The brand’s attention to detail, legendary reliability, and strong resale figures make it a favorite among buyers and are just some of the reasons Lexus SUVs regularly make our Best Luxury SUVs list.
The GX features standard 4-wheel drive, a 349-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and a suspension designed to be comfortable on-road and capable off. That’s no small feat, and one Lexus accomplishes with a new suspension backed by a phalanx of sophisticated off-road aids. On the new Overtrail trim, that means Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension, and an electronically controlled locking rear differential.
As impressive as the mechanicals appear, the real magic happens inside the GX’s cabin, so let’s take a closer look at what awaits.
Passenger Room and Comfort
Being a Lexus, comfort and passenger accommodation are top priorities. It should be no surprise that the new GX excels in both areas. It offers seating for seven, but you can opt for second-row captain’s chairs that drop total occupancy to six. The off-road-ready Overtrail deletes the third row, creating a massive cargo hold for carrying everything from outdoor gear to wet dogs, while accommodating up to five people total.
Legroom in the first and second rows is generous, while the third row with its 31.9 inches is more suited for the kiddos. Rear seat passengers enjoy ceiling-mounted air vents, second- and third-row seat climate controls, and USB charging ports. Models with the power-folding third-row seat also get a power reclining feature.
Features and Tech
The 2025 GX touts a 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster and a generous 14-inch touchscreen featuring the latest Lexus software. The system includes cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and several Lexus apps.
We love the big panoramic roof featuring an electrochromic glass panel that goes from transparent to frost with just the push of a button. There’s an available center console cool box for keeping drinks and snacks cold, a wireless phone charging pad, a 10.7-inch color head-up display, and a panoramic view monitor. On the Overtrail trim, a multi-terrain monitor provides the driver with a clear view of the landscape around the GX.
Materials and Design
Lexus pulls off a clever trick in the GX, creating an opulent interior with a rugged vibe. You won’t find acres of wood trim or delicate fabrics woven into the doors and dash. Instead, Lexus gives the GX a handsome, angular instrument panel, soft to the touch and logically laid out.
Even the least expensive Premium trim includes upscale features like heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats. On the base Premium and rugged Overtrail, NuLuxe synthetic leather covers all rows of seats. Move to the GX Luxury, and you’ll get semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, and massaging front seats.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
Folding the GX’s second and third-row seats flat offers up to 76.9 cubic feet of usable cargo space. However, with all three rows in place, there isn’t much room for cargo behind the third row, only 10.3 cubic feet. Accessing the third row is easy thanks to second-row seats that fold and tumble forward. Likewise, accessing the cargo bay is simplified thanks to the built-in flip-up rear window in the rear liftgate.
